Description

The Belay Foundation places Specialist Support Workers in the homes of families whose children have previously been in local authority care.

A fantastic opportunity is available to support an eleven year old girl.

This role would be for around 4-6 hours a week during term time (two after school sessions, and every other Saturday morning), and around 9-12 hours a week during the school holidays (likely to be over two to three days on flexible days of the week).

Additional hours are also likely to be available on a more ad hoc basis.

Hayley* is 11:
she is kind, caring and fun to spend time with. One of 4 siblings, Hayley lives with her older brother, older sister and younger sister.

At home Hayley loves baking, listening to music, dancing and performing "shows" with her younger sister When out of the house, Hayley loves trampolining and cycling, finds swinging particularly comforting, and enjoys spending time with animals.

Hayley goes to an independent special school, and has some complex needs including sensory difficulties - she struggles with loud or busy environments, meeting new people, and going to unfamiliar places.

This role is to support Hayley by spending time with her at home in the week playing board games, baking or sharing stories, and taking her out every other Saturday to a local riding club.

In the holidays there will be opportunities to undertake longer trips, perhaps to a National Trust property or doing cycling outings.

You will get to know the whole family; indeed, sometimes you'll be supporting one or more of Hayley's siblings - two of whom also live with complex developmental trauma due to their early life experiences - so that Hayley can spend 1:1 time with her parents; while at other times you may well be supporting all the children alongside one or both parents.

There will also be opportunities for additional hours "babysitting" all four children so the parents can have some time for themselves.

The key aims of the role are to develop trusted relationships primarily with Hayley but also with all the members of the family, and to provide patient, reliable and reassuring care.

You will have experience of working with children, plus either experience supporting children with developmental trauma and additional needs or a strong interest in learning about this area of work.

It is essential that you will be comfortable and happy to work with Hayley's parents through using models of care that work well for them as a family, and be able to combine playfulness with emotional maturity and personal resilience.

You will need to have a car, and be willing and confident to drive Hayley and possibly her brothers and/or sister, as the family live in a village outside Bath with very limited public transport so nearly all activities require a car to access.

To support you, The Belay Foundation will offer training in attachment and trauma, safeguarding, professional boundaries and regulating techniques, as well as other any other preparation that will help you in the role.

You will also receive ongoing support, peer supervision and clinical supervision.

This is a great opportunity to develop your practice supporting children with trauma and to learn about the impact of complex additional needs on children's development and family life.
