Description

Do you want to help us improve human health and understand life on Earth? Make your mark by shaping the future to enable or deliver life-changing science to solve some of humanity's greatest challenges.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Manager to join our Genomic Surveillance Unit here at the Wellcome Sanger Institute.

This is a key role, driving the delivery of strategically important work which uses genomic information as a practical tool for local disease control, and as a pillar of global pandemic preparedness.

The Genomic Surveillance Unit is a not-for-profit organisation.

Our team is rapidly growing in line with the increasing global demand for genomic surveillance, and we are now recruiting an additional Project Manager to be part of the team driving success.

A scientific or research background is advantageous but not vital.

Examples of our work include:

  • Extensive involvement in COVID19 surveillance activities in the UK, providing public health agencies with insight to detect and manage outbreaks;
  • Being at the forefront of the fight against Malaria through our work with the international epidemiology network MalariaGEN;
  • Working with our research partners to translate scientific discovery research into operational surveillance;
  • Delivering nonscientific projects and programmes such as organisational change and IT transformation.

Our portfolio of projects is varied, with the opportunity to work across multiple scientific programmes and / or support services.

About you
To excel in this role you will need the following skills and experience:

  • You are an experienced project professional, with a track record of delivering change in multiple and varied environments, alongside stakeholders from all levels of an organisation.
  • Able to assess the strengths and weaknesses of various project management techniques (such as agile and waterfall) so that an appropriate approach can be taken according to the unique demands of each project.
  • Comfortable working alongside a team of Project Managers in an extensive, dynamic and fastpaced environment with continually shifting focus and priorities.
  • Able to engage and collaborate with many other teams across the organisation, demonstrating strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Practiced in creating and maintaining the common and fundamental project management processes e.g., initiation, planning, executing, monitoring, risk management, change control and associated project schedules and documentation.
  • Due to the pace of change within the team, you must be able to prioritise activities and meet deadlines whilst preserving the high level of accuracy and confidentiality needed.
