Summary of Role
Costain provides Engineering and Design services to the Energy, Water, Defence and Transport Sectors.

Our Process Engineering and Front End Solutions teams have exciting opportunities available to join our growing team working on Energy Transition projects as well as more traditional Oil & Gas projects.

We are seeking to recruit Principal Process Engineers to lead process teams working on projects and studies across the project lifecycle including Feasibility, Concept, FEED and Detailed Design who have extensive knowledge and experience in the design of Natural Gas Processing, Storage and Transport Facilities and/or in Process Technologies relevant to Energy Transition to help solve our customer's challenges in energy production, energy transition and environmental management.


A Lead/Principal Process Engineer will normally be the most senior engineer of their discipline on a project with full authority to act as the Lead Process Engineer or Study Manager.

The role will report to the Discipline Lead for Process Engineering.


Costain's Process Engineering team delivers process engineering design services for major projects at the FEED and Detailed Design project phases with current projects including major modifications to onshore gas terminals to extend field life, hydrogen projects related to energy transition and Industrial Cluster projects.

We also support the Front End Solutions team which delivers optimised process solutions to customers in the energy production, energy transition and related industries, including oil & gas production, energy storage, carbon capture, hydrogen fuel switching, emissions reduction, and potentially also in power and nuclear process.

The team is focused on finding the best solutions in the earliest phases of projects and, where necessary, to develop technologies required for delivery of these solutions.


Responsibilities


To lead a team of process engineers on major project proposals, FEEDS and detailed design, to execute the process engineering scope of work according to contract requirements, following company and client standards and procedures.

Responsibility for discipline quality, programme and cost targets.

  • Lead teams on engineering studies at feasibility and concept select stages, with full accountability for quality, budget and schedule
  • Perform own design work and check work by others in accordance with company procedures
  • Approve project deliverables when authorised by the Process Engineering Technical Authority
  • Represent Process Engineering in discussions and meetings with client, vendors and third parties
  • Develop discipline programme activities/deliverables and interdependencies, plan for adequate resources, to monitor and report design progress and manhour usage to the project management team
  • Work in a collaborative multidisciplinary project delivery team, through proactive liaison with other disciplines and to ensure integration of Process Engineering design requirements into the overall engineering design
  • Work collaboratively with business development, work winning and marketing functions to develop and tender new opportunities for both front end studies and major projects needing process technology input
  • Support the Discipline Lead
  • Process Engineering in the technical development of the function
  • Offer advice and support to colleagues and subordinates on development needs taking into account work activities, learning ability and circumstances
  • Communicate to team members the project objectives and execution strategies and provide guidance as required on company workflow, methods and business systems
  • Ensure personal compliance with current company policy, relevant legislation and company and client's requirements for Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental matters and work in such a manner not to cause personal harm or injury to fellow workers, client and subcontractor employees or the environment
  • Support the Discipline Lead
  • Process Engineering in delivering the company performance management process


The role is based in the Costain Manchester Office and may require travel to company, supplier or customer offices or sites for business purposes.

Specific Competencies Required

  • UK regulatory environment, and relevant energy industry codes and standards
  • Wide and indepth knowledge of processes and technologies employed in the processing and transportation of natural gas
  • Process Technology Selection

  • Steady state process simulation and process optimisation
  • FEED & detailed design process design deliverables including development of Heat and Material Balances, Process Flow Diagrams, Process Design Philosophies, P&ID's, Cause & Effect's Process specification of Major & Utility Equipment, Piping and Instrumentation, Relief and Blowdown calculations
  • Technical safety & environmental including HAZID, ENVID, HAZOP and SIL assessment
  • Project cost estimating, interfacing with estimating function
  • Commercial awareness, including overall project execution strategies

Qualifications & Experience

  • First degree in Chemical Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer preferred (MIChemE/FIChemE)
  • Deep knowledge and experience of a range of gas processing, hydrogen and carbon capture technologies, ideally including gas sweetening, mercury removal, gas dehydration, NGL recovery, nitrogen removal, dewpointing, NGL fractionation, liquids treatment, produced water treatment, hydrate inhibition, phase separation, compression and pumping. Knowledge and experience of other relevant technologies and sectors is beneficial
  • Experience across full project lifecycle feasibility, concept, FEED and EPC
  • Significant previous experience in a Lead Process Engineer delivery role managing small to medium sized process teams
