Why this job matters

  • BT Cargo Community Systems is an endtoend business unit providing, amongst other things, a globally respected Cargo Community Service encompassing UK customs and border security compliance. The service handles customs and safety and security declarations and bonded cargo movements for cargo entering and leaving the UK via air and road. We are an HMRC and IATA strategic partner.

  • The focus of this role is to bring supply chain and customs/border compliance expertise to create new and innovative products and services which generate significant new efficiencies across the cargo communities and the global supply chains they operate. You will use your expertise to create innovative processes and solutions and be able to see them right through from idea to business case and requirements and onto product design, testing and deployment. You'll also advise on compliance implications and risks and be accountable for ensuring that these risks are mitigated/managed. For example, through contracts with suppliers, partners and customers.
What you'll be doing

  • Accountable for product and service direction based on your knowledge of the cargo/supply chain industry, government policy and initiatives.
  • Develop innovative processes and solutions and manage these from concept through to requirements, design, test and deployment. You'll be accountable for deliverables including business cases, requirements specifications, highlevel designs and test cases.
  • Be able to articulate, both verbally and in written form, the impacts of industry and legislative change and the products and services to support the evolution of the global supply chain.
  • Ensure that business and technical assurance are implemented at every stage of the product lifecycle and that the technical implementation aligns with the business, functional and nonfunctional requirements and risk profile. Where not, you'll put plans in place to address these including risk mitigation.
  • You will, through your ideas, drive innovation and efficiencies across the supply chain to enhance the frictionless flow of goods across borders and way beyond whilst achieving compliance with changing government requirements and policies.
  • What we would like to see on your CV
  • You will already be a Customs and Border specialist which may have been gained through 5+ years' experience as a Customs or Policy Specialist within government; as a Customs Compliance Manager for a large freight forwarder; or as the lead border and customs specialist within a freight software supplier.
  • You will have an indepth understanding of customs and border processes and compliance including the systems supporting these. For example, the end to end processes for movements from EU or RoW to UK (and vice versa), port and community systems, carrier systems and those relating to Customs, Border Security, plant and animal health, licensing etc. For example, CHIEF, CDS, GVMS, ICS, NCTS, EMCS, TRACES, PEACH, IPAFFS, ALVS etc.
  • You'll understand liabilities, stakeholders and implications based on incoterms and contract of sale. You'll understand trade agreements, tariffs and declaration data elements.
