The BCU Mental Health and Wellbeing team is seeking a part-time Cognitive Behavioural Therapist to join its team of mental health and wellbeing professionals (including current CBT Therapists).

This is an exciting time for the team as senior sponsorship and increased resource drive an agenda of change and innovation designed to diversify the University's offering and enhance the student experience.


The post holder will provide confidential, professional, brief Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for students seeking help with personal and academic problems affecting their mental health, emotional and psychological functioning, and wellbeing in line with the aims, limits, and practices of the service.


They will assist the Student Services department in creating a therapeutic support structure for students experiencing distress by delivering Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and participating in the development of the service.


The key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Assess the needs of individual students and, if appropriate, refer and liaise with internal services and external agencies.
  • Offer CBT sessions to clients.
  • Manage the resulting caseload with the ongoing support of an external Supervisor and, when appropriate, the Head of Mental Health and Wellbeing Operations.
  • Be available for liaison and consultation with colleagues, both within Student Services and the University as a whole. Develop good working relationships with colleagues within the University and other professionals in the wider community.
  • Undertake appropriate professional development activities, related specifically to competence as a CBT Therapist and to maintaining professional accreditation.
  • Assist in the gathering, updating, and disseminating of information to students, staff, and other University users about access to support services and the University's facilities.
  • Participate in the development of initiatives and the delivery of therapy in relation to the student audience, i.e., group work, evaluative questionnaire, online counselling.
  • Monitor appropriate service standards and, with the Head of Mental Health and Wellbeing Operations, ensure compliance with both legal requirements and the demands of best practice.
  • Keep accurate and confidential records and session case notes as required by data protection and in line with the BABCP ethical framework and maintain accurate statistical records of work with clients and use these to update the database.
  • Assist the Head of Mental Health and Wellbeing Operations to monitor and collate feedback from students and staff by appropriate means.

Essential requirements for the role are:

  • A CBT qualification to masters level which meets the theory and skills training criteria for British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Therapy accreditation (or for accreditation by UKCP or BPS).
  • Accreditation by BACP/BABCP.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent.
  • Significant experience of working as a paid CBT Therapist in a formal therapeutic setting.
  • Experience of managing a significant caseload and accurate record keeping.

Desirable requirements for the role:


  • Experience of working as a therapist with students in HE settings.
  • Experience of working with clients from a varied ethnic and cultural background.
  • Experience of working with a timelimited approach.
  • A qualification in Supervision which meets BACP/BABCP or equivalent criteria.
  • Understanding of the HE context e.g., course structures, administrative procedures, support resources etc.
  • Experience of safeguarding procedures and the management of risk within an institution.
