Job summary:
The Defence Innovation Unit was set up to lead on delivery of innovation in MOD, coordinating innovation activities across the Department, breaking down barriers to innovation across Defence, engaging the Department's senior leaders and connecting across Government and with key international partners and allies.
We are a diverse team of both civil servants and military personnel, with varied professional backgrounds including policy, project delivery and science.
We manage investment portfolios of cutting-edge projects; champion creative ideas and capabilities within the department; work with diverse teams across Government to facilitate innovation; and seek to make Defence's culture and structure better suited to promote innovation.
The Strategy and Policy team are focused on breaking down barriers to innovation in Defence particularly through understanding, challenging and influencing wider Defence policy and strategy to ensure innovation is embedded at the heart of all that we do.
Job description:
The Defence Innovation Unit is committed to enabling international innovation. Whilst the role's focus may change over time, the main priority currently is on AUKUS.
AUKUS is a trilateral defence partnership (announced in September 2021) between the UK, Australia, and the United States of America.
AUKUS aims to preserve security in the Indo-Pacific region and advance joint military capabilities. The Defence Innovation Unit is leading the AUKUS Innovation Working Group within AUKUS Pillar Two. AUKUS Innovation is a dynamic, challenging and fast-paced area to work on.- lead the AUKUS Innovation Working Group ensuring it delivers successful outcomes at pace and on time.
- develop and maintain effective relationships with counterparts in Australia and the United States of America.
- lead the development of innovation strategy and policy including developing an innovation framework to improve trilateral collaboration
- deliver senior engagements, both within MOD and wider government but also internationally, including international events as required.
- consolidate demand signals from across the UK MOD to ensure that the innovation working group responds to the UK's most pressing needs in the Indo-Pacific region.
- develop policy position papers and think pieces at pace to influence senior decision makers.
- lead a small multi-disciplinary team to deliver on international and industrial strategy and policy requirements.
- lead on team development and ensuring that DIU remains an inclusive place to work.
