Molecular Therapy Advanced Specialist

Job Summary


The Clinical Biotechnology Centre (CBC), part of Cellular and Molecular Therapies (CMT) of NHSBT, is a specialist manufacturer of advanced therapies including both the production and testing of novel recombinant proteins and gene therapy products for clinical trials.

You will be responsible for the aseptic filling of final products, labelling and dispatch of final products. You will need to possess good aseptic techniques and confident in working in a GMP clean room suite.

You will be responsible for training of the filling team and will play a vital role in ensuring that all documentation and processing of products meets the relevant specifications required by the MHRA.

You will also assist with Filling SOP's and batch documentation and involved in any investigations.

This is a unique opportunity to work in an expanding field. You will need to have a MSc or equivalent experience.

You will also have the ability to interpret results from complex investigations and the significance of the results on the impact to the production of the product.

A part of your job will also be to organise and deliver training to staff and deal with any issues within the team.

Excellent communication skills to liaise with sponsors in a sensitive and professional manner is vital.


Main duties of the job

  • Analyse, interpret, validate, and report the results of routine and complex investigations, working at the level of responsibility and conduct required of an experienced Senior Scientist.
  • Perform processing of advanced molecular therapy products e.g. gene therapy, using complex scientific equipment such as bioreactors, purification equipment, HPLC and carry out investigations if required.
  • Maintain equipment to the required standards.
  • Receive and communicate highly complex and specialist advice to/from internal and external scientists, clinicians, other staff on for example the significance of test results.
  • Ensure products meet all specifications necessary for patient safety and therapeutic use according to internal and external quality requirements and operating within the boundaries of good manufacturing and laboratory practice.
  • Regularly participate in audits.
  • Use professional judgement to resolve scientific or technical problems and operational staffing issues, all of which may involve incomplete and/or conflicting information.

About You

Experience and Knowledge

  • In depth knowledge of advanced cell and molecular therapies or a complementary science
  • High level of expertise and competency in relevant advanced cell and molecular therapies or complementary scientific area
  • High level of proficiency in relevant specialised laboratory techniques/ environment
  • In depth knowledge of the standards of Good Manufacturing Practice and other relevant or statutory guidelines
  • Extensive experience of working in a Molecular therapy, cell culture, testing, development laboratory
  • Evidence of involvement in research and development projects with experience of molecular work
  • Experience of working with Information Technology using Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

Qualifications and Training

  • MSc or equivalent in cell and molecular therapies or relevant science
    OR equivalent specialist knowledge and experience gained by examination of a professional body or extensive relevant experience
    OR completion of a formal postgraduate training programme (or other relevant training) with in service experience
  • Demonstrate commitment to own Continued Professional Development (CPD)
