Job summary:

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is the department for economic growth. We support businesses to invest, grow and export, creating jobs and opportunities across the country.

The UK has a rich history in science and engineering and the Government has set an ambition to become a Science and Technology Superpower by 2030.

Business and trade are an important part of realising that policy ambition.

The Government has also prioritised the use of science and engineering evidence and the development of capability to deliver its objectives.

DBT's Chief Scientific Advisor (CSA) and her team are responsible both for providing expert, independent advice to Ministers and teams, and for developing the department's system for accessing and using science and engineering evidence.

They part of the government's senior science advisory network and work with the cross-government network of CSAs and the Government Office for Science to resolve cross-cutting issues.

Together, they have a strong emphasis on collaborative working and going the extra mile to provide a quality service.

As Chief of Staff to the CSA, this role presents an exciting opportunity within the newly formed DBT, to work closely with the CSA and team to establish the DBT science system and position the new department with the capability it needs to meet its strategic ambitions.

You will be responsible for overseeing delivery of the CSA's Private Office, and for providing policy advice and capability building functions that will help achieve the CSA vision for DBT.

-
Advice: Providing independent, expert advice, challenge and coherence to Ministers, Senior Officials and teams to ensure decisions account for science and engineering. Inputting to government science and engineering strategy to ensure business and trade are represented. Supporting horizon scanning.
-
Outreach: Representing DBT and the UK at external events, international missions, boards, and in external communications. Connecting DBT with the external science and engineering ecosystem and cross-government community.
-
Assurance:Providing expert review of technical science and engineering decisions, programmes, and expenditure. Developing DBT's system for accessing and using science and engineering evidence. Working in partnership with other analytical disciplines to build DBT's evidence base.
-
Capability: Championing science and engineering capability and access to expertise. Leading the Government Science and Engineering (GSE) Profession in DBT. Representing DBT's science and engineering community, raising science and engineering literacy, and building capability across the department.
