JOB PURPOSE


To provide clinical leadership for the service to Children and Young People with Universal, Targeted Speech or Complex, Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and to Families, Health Professionals and School based staff who care for them.

Together with Team Leaders and other Clinical Leads within the Children's Speech and Language Therapy Team and relevant Managers of Children's Services, to be responsible for issues relating to clinical practice and quality and for the performance of the team


To develop and maintain positive relationships with School based staff, and other relevant professionals and service managers to promote the early identification of Speech, Language and Communication Needs and the skills of the children's workforce in meeting their needs.


To provide highly specialist and high quality assessment and intervention in Community settings for children with speech language and communication needs, their carers and educators.

To share knowledge and skills with families and other professionals

To take the lead in the Speech and Language therapy team for working with the Designated Clinical Officer (DCO) for SEND in the Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and with the Local Authorities (LAs) to ensure a high quality service for children and families including in relation to Educational Health care advice and tribunals

Clinical responsibilities

  • To be professionally and legally accountable and responsible for all aspects of your work, including the management of children and families in your care including those with SEND.
  • To provide assessment and intervention for children with speech, language and communication needs at an advanced practitioner level, ensuring the best possible outcomes for children and their families.
  • To analyse and interpret clinical and nonclinical information to form an accurate profile of strengths, difficulties and needs, diagnoses and prognoses in a wide range of complex conditions.
  • To develop highly specialist therapy plans using evidencebased practice and to monitor and evaluation progress of child as appropriate using agreed outcome measures.
  • To work collaboratively with parents/carers, sharing knowledge and skills and supporting them to develop their understanding of their child's speech, language and communication difficulties and how they can help their child communicate
  • To work collaboratively with other professionals in order to develop appropriate programmes of care, including individual Education Plans, to enable them to provide a supportive environment for children's communication development.
  • To carry a case load of patients and to act as an advanced practitioner and provide second opinions and advice to colleagues including training for junior colleagues regarding these children and their suitability for recommendation for specialist provision.
  • To maintain timely, concise and accurate case notes for all client and client related contacts to departmental standards.
  • To maintain professional registration and to take part in any learning and development activities necessary for this
  • To develop and maintain the skills required to practise at an advanced practitioner level within your specialist field
  • To undertake clinical supervision
  • To ensure that staff undertake clinical supervision and are given protected time in which to undertake their supervision
  • To participate in the provision of specialist undergraduate SLT student placements including contribution to placement assessment.
  • To work with the SLT management team to develop and evaluate clinical services and to enhance quality, and productivity
  • To participate in the development of departmental clinical protocols, policies, procedures and standards.
  • To provide specialist training to professionals/nonprofessionals within own and other disciplines.
  • To work with the SLT management team to develop the clinical audit plan and contribute to Clinical Governance activity within the team
  • To maintain robust systems for collection and audit of clinical activity data
  • To advise on the implementation of national and local clinical guidance in the service area
