  • Offshore & Environmental who will join BT's Subsea cable team.
  • BT relies on submarine cables to form the backbone of the global transmission network delivering services and products to BT's multinational corporate customers. 97% of BT's international traffic is carried over submarine cables. BT also relies on submarine cables to deliver domestic services within the UK including superfast broadband meeting UK consumer and business customers expectations.
  • This job ensures that BT subsea cable assets are designed, engineered and operated in a way that meets BT's customers' requirements by ensuring that BT's offshore liaison obligations are met.
  • This job can be based at any BT strategic location in the UK (Birmingham, Ipswich, Bristol, London, Belfast, Goonhilly or others).

What you'll be doing

  • Provides sound technical expertise to deliver timely response to queries, identifying and mitigating operational risks as appropriate, with reference to crossing and proximity agreements, permits and consents and/or environmental studies for existing and new BT subsea cable assets.
  • Responsible for regulatory compliant environmental assessments including marine and freshwater Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Habitats Regulations Appraisal (HRA) and Water Framework Directive (WFD) assessments to support all Subsea team projects in and near aquatic environments.
  • Develops effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders & industry bodies (e.g. ESCA) to explore opportunities for partnership, acting as the point of escalation for issue resolution, in particular the main UK permitting authorities (e.g. Crown Estates, Marine Scotland, Marine Management Organisation etc.) and their statutory consultees.
  • Full contribution to development of guidelines and policies to manage network planning with respect to subsea cables.
  • Uses technical expertise to propose planning processes, including the development and proof of concept, engagement of front door and process validation.
  • Provides legal support to members of the Legal team including conducting research and undertaking projects under the guidance of more senior legal professionals, ensuring that all statutory and regulatory offshore obligations for new and existing BT subsea cable assets are met.
  • Handles routine legal matters and provides advice within an established framework.
  • May represent the company in legal proceedings.
  • Provides support and advice to deliver operational activities, using sound technical capabilities to deliver relevant plans while ensuring adherence to standards.
  • Delivers highimpact operational activities for subsea systems, monitoring performance and ensuring feedback is inputted to the management process.
  • Seeks continuous improvement and efficiency opportunities in order to centralise, standardise and simplify processes, contributing to the delivery of improvement projects and initiatives.
  • Accountable for the delivery and evaluation of plans in terms of design, resource, permitting requirements and budget constraints.
  • Responsible for environmental and legal compliance within the Subsea team, including participation in any required audits.

What you'll bring

  • Subsea Cable Marine Technology: marine planning, survey, route engineering and installation.

  • Subsea cable technical knowledge.
  • Understanding of GIS (geographic Information systems)
  • Working in an international arena.
- knowledge of Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

  • Knowledge of impact assessment for ornithology, marine mammals, fish and shellfish.
  • Experience of planning examinations or inquiries.
  • Legal knowledge of statutory and regulatory offshore obligations.
