Job summary:


The Diagnostics, Evaluation and Innovation Teams are recruiting a permanent Senior Project Team Leader within the Pathogen Characterisation, Diagnostics & Evaluation department, based on site at UKHSA Porton Down.

The Diagnostics, Evaluation and Innovation Teams review, evaluates, develops and implements diagnostic assays for use in UKHSA/NHS and locally for the Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory (RIPL) working with suppliers, commercial partners and academic groups.

Job description:


The post holder will be key members within the Diagnostics, Innovation and Evaluation Teams providing expertise to ensure that scientific and technical projects are delivered to the constraints of cost, time and quality.


The successful applicant will manage staff and projects developing, evaluating and implementing a range of molecular, serological and antigenic methods in support of diagnostic evaluation activities.

They will identify, evaluate and adapt new technologies where appropriate and assist in developing scientific and technical strategies.


Responsibilities section:


  • To manage the projects developing, evaluating and implementing a range of molecular, serological and antigenic methods in support of diagnostic evaluation activities for ACDP HG 2/3/4 pathogens, ensuring targets are met according to agreed specifications and timelines.
  • Take lead responsibility for the provision of validated and verified assays, reagents and consumables required for the projects.
  • To act as principal investigator of the project team taking lead responsibility to identify, evaluate and adapt new technologies where appropriate in consultation with the scientific lead and to ensure that the project operates to a high scientific standard using current methods.
  • Establish links and collaborations within and outside UKHSA as necessary to benefit the project and/or department including submission of proposals.
  • Assist senior colleagues, leading where necessary in developing scientific and technical strategy of the project or derived projects, identifying new opportunities as they arise and responding to funding calls or customer enquiries.
  • Take lead responsibility for the supervision and training of junior staff allocated to the project.
  • Provide reports as required and lead on preparation of presentations, publications and liaison via teleconferences with the customer as well as dealing with enquiries as necessary.
  • To perform any other duties required by the Line manager commensurate with grade.
  • To ensure that the project team undertakes work in accordance with UKHSA's Code of Safety Practice and to work within any Quality Systems that are applicable to the site.
  • To maintain health and safety competence.
  • To fulfil the requirements of UKHSA Values and Behaviours and the Civil Service Code.

Person specification:


Essential Criteria:


  • PhD in appropriate discipline with considerable postdoctoral level experience (or other degree eg MSc with significant experience in the field) in an appropriate scientific discipline.
  • Specialist training/experience in assay development, evaluation and validation for the clinical diagnosis of bacteria and viruses,
  • Evidence of leading projects/project teams and dealing with customers/clients
  • Significant experience in areas relevant to the project
  • Breadth of experience covering all aspects of post requirements.
  • Experience of having worked in a regulated environment
  • Recognised in own field of research through publication record in peer review journals and/or as expert referee/panel member
  • Presentation and project reporting skills
  • Training in Project leadership and presentation skills
  • Must be able to provide and rec
