The Respiratory Physiology Department and the Sleep service are intimately involved in delivering diagnostic Testing as part of the national Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) Project, and this course is designed to support this project.


We are a multidisciplinary team consisting of doctors, nurses, physiologists, polysomnographer, technicians and clerical staff, and are looking to recruit a trainee Band 4 to develop and potentially qualify as a Band 5 Respiratory Physiologist.

Join as a student/trainee role to undertake the NSHCS Diploma in Respiratory Science.

A major component of this role will be work based clincal exposure and learning to perform a wide range of pulmonary function and exercise diagnostic testing for the respiratory Outpatients Department and wider hospital departments.

The role also incorporates carrying out Sleep Physiology work based tasks.


The Respiratory physiology team offer a comprehensive range of pulmonary function and exercise tests including Spirometry, gas transfer, lung volumes, allergy testing, challenge testing and cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

The sleep service are responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. We also offer student training and provide training to other PHT employees at various levels.


The role will involve training to become an independent practitioner in a variety of testing modalities, and becoming a participant in multidisciplinary team meetings, as well as engaging in team audits and education.


As a trainee, we will fully support you on your academic pursuits, and you will benefit from a a highly specialise and experienced team to learn from.


Job Summary

  • Study towards Graduate Diploma in Respiratory Science
  • To provide specialist care as part of the multidisciplinary respiratory physiology team
  • To work as an autonomous practitioner involved in the diagnosis of patients with a wide variety of respiratory and sleep conditions
  • As an autonomous practitioner, provide a point of contact for these patients as well as their carers, and other health care professionals to obtain advice, education and support.
  • You must be able to work independently (to protocols), be flexible and adaptable in your attitude to work and enjoy being part of a very busy service, where you can demonstrate your initiative and reliability.
