The National Lottery Promotions Unit (NLPU) raises positive public awareness of National Lottery brand and the funding which changes the lives of ordinary people through the £30 million it raises every week for good causes all across the UK.

National Lottery players help build local communities, power sports teams, protect the environment, unleash creative talent, look after the elderly and unlock youthful potential.

In addition, support from the National Lottery wins Olympic medals and Oscars.

The role, Programme Lead:

National Lottery 30th Birthday celebrations will sit within the National Lottery Promotions Unit, and we're looking for someone who wants to work at the very heart of the National Lottery.

Under the guidance of the NLPU Director, you will lead work on our programme, planning, and strategy implementation for the 30th Birthday Programme, and put in place the frameworks, reporting structures and policies and approaches to deliver an outstanding consumer-facing campaign.

As well as complex project management and planning skills, you will need to be an excellent communicator who can quickly develop close relationships with Chairs and members of the six National Lottery 30th Birthday Working Groups.

These groups lead on the key programme areas of - Data, Grant Acknowledgement, Public Affairs, Strategy, Communications and Funding.

You will have the support of your Director, NLPU team and colleagues from across the whole National Lottery family.

With a UK-wide remit you will need to be proactive in engaging with multiple teams/senior stakeholders across the twelve National Lottery distributors, the operator, the DCMS and the Gambling Commission.

You will be expert at full programme evaluation and identifying a clear return on investment to report back to The National Lottery family.

We are looking for an individual with extensive experience of campaign development, programme management and focussed evaluation.


Contract: 18 months


Hours: 37 hours a week, flexible, hybrid working

Essential criteria:


  • Robust record of developing and delivering a complex programme across organisational boundaries, with ability to identify opportunities and approaches that are not yet utilised.
  • Experience of tackling challenging issues, with multiple differing views across organisations to find solutions.
  • Experience of development of, and implementation of, delivery plans that cut across multiple functions. Leading on resolving competing priorities and tensions across teams and with senior leaders while maintaining pace and progress.
  • Passion for and understanding of the role of National Lottery good cause funding and the environment we operate in. A strong understanding of budgets, complexities and risks involved in delivering a programme of this scale.
  • A track record in introducing consistent and realistic core principles, priorities and a focus on programme delivery across the whole of the UK.
  • You will coordinate planning and delivery of the celebrations, including ensuring that activities across the different bodies within the National Lottery Family are complementary and build towards the anniversary in November 2024. Celebrations will be UKwide and will have focus on increasing local awareness of National Lottery investments. All activities will be delivered through the One National Lottery communication brand style.
  • An ability to develop and enhance excellent relationships with a diverse range of senior level internal and external stakeholders, you will have experience in creating connections and driving shared responsibilities.
  • You will also be the initial point of contact/reference for internal stakeholder enquiries on the 30th Birthday Programme. As part of the National Lottery Promotions Unit, you will also need to work within the National Lottery Community Fund's policies and procedures and the necessary legislation, and in a way that is in line with our vision and principles.
