Applications are invited for a Abdominal Wall Research Fellow in General Surgery at York Teaching Hospital NHS FT.

The post will be initially for one year fixed term with possibility of extending to two years and is suitable for a surgical trainee pre MRCS.

This post provides opportunity for a trainee who has completed their foundation years training to undertake a period of closely supervised clinical research whilst enhancing their surgical skills through undertaking CT level on-calls and up to 2 clinical sessions per week which may include endoscopy, regular theatre lists or day surgery according to the needs of the trainee.

This post may facilitate registration with the HYMS for the consideration of Postgraduate diploma, MSc or MD

The principle duty of this post is to provide a comprehensive clinical service to patients from and around York.

The post holder will provide general surgery on call cover at F2/CT level.

The on-call rota will be 1:9 This is split into 2 shifts - 8am until 8pm and then a separate shift of 8pm-8 am.

On call is supported at all times by on site surgical registrar.

The duration of the post is for 24 months.

There will be the opportunity to work at both sites of the Trust (York and Scarborough) and be involved in various ongoing research activities at both hospitals.

Current research interests of the directorate include peroperative risk assessment with the use of indocyanine to determine abdominal wall vascularity, development of quality of life questionaires specific to abdominal wall hernia repairs, fascial compartments of abdominal wall and tension curves, development of physics of tension curves in abdominal wall closure and in abdominal wall hernia New ideas for research projects will be welcomed.

The appointee will be closely supervised and assessed by consultant surgeons with significant clinical and experimental research experience in abdominal wall.

The appointee will be expected to produce material for presentations at local and national meetings and submit material for publication in peer review journals.

Previous post holders have published in peer reviewed journals and presented at national and international meetings.

Depending on previous experience, the post offers training in research methods (both qualitative and quantitative) and supervision of a number of projects, including literature review, retrospective data analysis etc.


York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (YTHNFT) is part of the joint undergraduate Hull and York Medical School (HYMS) with partners the University of York, University of Hull and Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

YTHNFT have Post Graduate Medical Centres on both the main sites in York and Scarborough, with up to date audiovisual equipment.

YTHNFT recognises the importance of continuing professional development and supports medical staff. There are good Medical and Nursing libraries available on both hospital sites. A permanent librarian is available and literature searches and reference articles are easily obtained.

The library at York has close links with the library services at the University of York as well as the University of York St John.
