About the Group


The Public Spending Group has a high-profile role in Government, setting the Government's overall spending plans and ensuring they deliver value for money for the taxpayer.

We are responsible for reporting to Parliament and the public on how taxpayers' money is spent.

We drive forward improved outcomes and efficiency in public services and enhance the value for money of decision-making through better evaluation, data and analysis.

We advise on overall government policy on public sector pay and pensions, the biggest single driver of public spending.

We collaborate with and directly support departments to deliver the Government Finance Function strategy, building finance capability across government and developing the management information, tools and frameworks to better understand and ensure value for money.


About the Team


The Government Finance Function is a diverse community of over 10,000 people, spread right across the UK, with some overseas, and three-quarters are based outside of London.

The function brings together a range of expertise, including technical accountants, business partners, planning and performance leads, risk managers, internal auditors and spending policy teams.


The vision of the GFF central team, which sits within HM Treasury, is to ensure that finance is at the heart of decision making in Government - delivering value for money, strengthening public trust.

It is at the forefront of the Government's functional agenda, working to break down silos, share the excellent best-practice that exists across Government, and establish effective relationships with cross-government colleagues.


We're looking to recruit a Communications and Engagement Lead to work in the Strategy, Engagement and Performance Team, which is a high profile and dynamic team at the heart of the GFF.

The team focuses on the following areas that are central to delivering the GFF's vision:


  • Setting the strategic direction for the function
  • Working with departments to ensure we focus on key challenges to develop solutions that drive better outcomes for government
  • Measuring and understanding performance across the function
  • Running strategic projects to set best practice and upskill the finance community
  • Developing communications to connect with over 10,000 finance employees by building a common identity
  • Running events designed to engage and educate audiences across government

Key Accountabilities


Although the primary focus of your work will be engagement, we're a small, hardworking team and there will be numerous opportunities to stretch out into other aspects of communications and engagement, for example creating innovative, digital content, liaising with our expanding collection of staff networks and supporting with external affairs.
