Syndicate 1183 underwrites multiple classes of business including Political Violence/Terrorism, Marine, Energy (off-shore and on-shore), Marine and Energy Liability, Hull, Cargo and Specie, Political Risk, Property, Accident and Health, Financial Lines, Cyber, Alternative Risks, Non-Physical Cyber and Treaty Reinsurance.

Syndicate 2019 reinsures premium written by AIG's Private Client Group, covering Homeowners, Auto, General Specie and other products.


The Talbot Marine team is a leading global carrier in the marine market, writing a diversified book of Marine Hull and War with associated ancillary interests, for a wide variety of vessel types and covering all aspects of Marine liabilities.

About the role


What you need to know:


As an Assistant Underwriter in our Marine Cargo team, you will be responsible for supporting and underwriting marine cargo risks aligned with our underwriting philosophy, appetite, and authority limits.

Working as part of a close-knit team you will support and assist the Head of Cargo and Class Underwriter, helping them deliver on strategy and business plans, with a focus on providing a professional, prompt service to brokers and clients.


Responsibilities to include but not limited to:

  • Review endorsements and underwrite renewal business in line with your underwriting authority.
  • Enter risks (including endorsements, quotes, promised lines and the like) into underwriting systems to the standard required, in accordance with applicable procedures.
  • Analyse and produce/ assist in the analysis/ production of reports and statistics as required, including in respect of the business planning process and accounting exercises.
  • Assist the team in the monitoring and control of specific accounts.
  • Prepare information packs and accompanying summaries as required/ requested, including the collation of brokersupplied material.
  • Assist in ensuring that premium entries are reviewed and accurately maintained in accordance with applicable procedures.
  • Liaise with brokers, clients, and other professionals as necessary.

What we're looking for:

  • Exposure to marine cargo underwriting
  • Working towards ACII
  • High attention to detail
  • Analytical/ numerically literate
  • Understanding of the London insurance market (Lloyd's and/or Company)
  • Able to work as part of a team or independently
  • Ability to multitask and prioritise with limited guidance
