Defence Munitions receive, store, maintain & issue a wide range of munitions that are used by the UK armed forces to train, protect, and serve anywhere in the world.

Our Defence Munitions staff work closely with DE&S project teams and front-line commands to ensure our troops have the right items at the right time.

We work as an important part of the wider MoD establishment that supports, procures and supplies our troops, providing them with a range of munitions from bullets, shells, and flares up to and including and complex weapons such as high-calibre ammunition and guided or targeted weapons.

As a Complex Weapons Fitter you will be part of a team within one of two distinct roles.

The first role is primarily responsible for delivery of production and engineering outputs for various MoD customers.

You will work within a team of experienced craftsmen, performing a range of clearly defined and challenging processing operations which can include assembly and disassembly, preparation and testing of complex weapons as well as their associated support equipment.


The second role is within the Mechanical Maintenance department and the primary task is to carry out scheduled maintenance and reactive breakdown maintenance within the depot in support of weapon processing.

This maintenance will include, but not limited to, building plant and machinery, HP/LP air systems, lifting equipment, weapon handling and support equipment.

About the role


These roles involve a range of production and engineering operations to deliver wider set plans that follow controlled processing documentation; ensuring production and maintenance output targets and aims are achieved to the requisite high quality and safety standards.


You will have opportunities to provide advice on a range of technical solutions, including highly complex issues with a 'continuous improvement' mindset and in line with our organisational goals.

This will be in keeping with the relevant statutory and mandatory MoD safety standards to manage the risk generated by operations in an 'As Low as Reasonably Practicable' (ALARP) fashion.

You'll work within a multi-disciplinary team working on a range of equipment so excellent communication skills are essential to achieve the diverse range of goals and objectives in a coherent, timely and effective way.

To successfully perform this role, you will be able to demonstrate a solid understanding of engineering practices and methodologies at interview.


Please note:
A medical is required to be passed, before starting in this position.

They are site-based roles, and they may require travel to other Defence Munition and DE&S locations in both the UK and abroad.

Reasonable notice will be given, with flexibility and a family friendly approach in mind. Travel and subsistence costs will be covered.

For roles in Beith and Gosport only, a pensionable allowance of £4,000 is also payable.


For roles in Beith only, a retention bonus payable until May 2024 of £6,000 per annum payable retrospectively in instalments of £3K with the next payment due in August 2023 and February 2024 and will be paid pro-rata dependant on when someone starts and will also be pro-rata for those working part-time.


Person specification
Recognised Mechanical / Electrical Apprenticeship in a relevant engineering discipline at L3 NVQ/SVQ or equivalent within the specialisation

  • ONC in a relevant Mechanical / Electrical Engineering discipline
  • Experience in a production background
  • Strong knowledge of safety legislation and safe working to adhere to and work within relevant Safety Management Systems
  • IT literacy and Microsoft Office Experience
  • A broad understanding of risk and working within a lean improvement environment
  • Experience with Configuration Control
