We have an exciting opportunity for a creative Principal Technical Artist to join our Technical Art team at Sumo Nottingham.

As a Principal Technical Artist, you will collaborate to find technical solutions to fulfil the artistic vision of our projects.

You will partner with the wider Art team and the Technical Art Director to problem solve, innovate and produce tools for our project pipelines to ensure the studio is producing top-quality Art.


This is an exciting opportunity for an aspiring Senior Technical Artist or an existing Principal/Lead to join a passionate and friendly team.

You will get the chance to work on some really exciting AAA console and PC game titles and will receive great training and objective progression at Sumo Nottingham and within the wider Sumo Group.

**We're open to this person being based in-studio position or operating in a remote hybrid model.


Within this role you will:


  • Collaborate with the team on technical solutions to deliver the art vision and drive the visual fidelity of the game.
  • Buildupon, create and maintain art pipelines, identifying and developing new tools and processes.
  • Help define and meet ingame asset budgets and optimise levels, meshes, materials, lighting, postprocesses and vfx.
  • Communicate effectively between art and code, providing guidelines, best practices and documentation for workflows etc.
  • Keep up to date with new technologies and techniques, current game development practices and utilise this effectively in game production.
**Knowledge, experience and skills: - Ideally at least 2 shipped titles (preferably AAA).

  • Experience of Game production level shader work and optimisation, including the creation of physical based shaders.
  • A good understanding of realtime rendering, VFX and lighting workflows and pipelines.
  • Strong scripting and coding abilities.
  • A high level of attention to aesthetic detail.
  • High levels of competence with 3D modelling, texturing and animation packages.
  • Excellent complex problemsolving and communication skills across both artistic and technical disciplines.
  • Be highly experienced with blueprints and their implementation.
  • Knowledge of platform strengths and limitations.
**It'd also be great if you have: - A good knowledge of Unreal Engine 4 or Unreal Engine 5 and the flexibility to adapt to custom game engines.

  • Ideally, a minimum of 5 years production expirence working on AAA games.
  • Familiarity of working in an agile environment.
