We are looking for an experienced part time counsellor to join our newly established Health team.

You will support New Horizon Youth Centre's mission to enable young people to use their strengths to live a life that is safe, full of health and opportunity, and in a home that they deserve.

You will play an important role in expanding our counselling service, ensuring a greater number of young people who are facing homelessness or are unsafe have the opportunity to access 1:1 and group therapeutic support.

You should be confident and flexible to deliver sessions face-to-face in a busy day centre environment, as well as remotely over the phone.

Previous experience of working with young people is not essential, but you should be genuinely passionate about improving young people's access to health services and providing them with positive interventions to enable them to move forward.

The role is based at our day centre in Camden and may involve some homeworking.

Qualifications, experience, and track record

  • A recognised counselling qualification at Level 4 or above. (E)
  • Registered or accredited by a professional counselling body such as BACP or equivalent (E)
  • Practical experience in a counselling or psychotherapy role and track record of managing a caseload of clients. (E)
  • Experience of working in a therapeutic setting with young people from NHYC's client group and using creative techniques to engage young people. (D)
  • Ability to form and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with young people with multiple complex needs. (E)
  • Ability to engage clients from diverse communities in therapeutic processes and deliver counselling with cultural sensitivity considering the needs of the whole person (E)
  • Fluency in others languages reflected in the diverse London communities we serve (D)
  • Experience of developing and facilitating engaging group therapy sessions. (E)
  • Ability to create and maintain external partnerships and networks to achieve organisational aims and objectives, including working in partnership to deliver health services to young people. (E)
  • Experience of using IT systems (including knowledge of databases) to support the achievement of personal and collective work goals. (E)

Special knowledge and job requirements

  • Awareness of the BACP Ethical Framework or similar accreditation. (E)
  • Understanding of the kinds of challenging behaviour that clients might demonstrate and ability to deliver strategies for dealing with such behaviour. (E)
  • Excellent understanding of the impact of complex trauma on young people, and the experience to work with issues of risk (E)
  • Thorough and uptodate working knowledge of relevant organisations and their role and responsibilities in providing support to vulnerable young people. (D)
  • Knowledge of working to performance indicators, including monitoring and reporting on service outputs/outcomes, client tracking, analysing performance information, and identifying corrective action (E)
  • Experience and knowledge around safeguarding policy and procedures for children and vulnerable adults. (E)
  • A working knowledge of and commitment to Diversity & Equality as it applies to a supportive service and in the workplace (E)

Additional job requirements

  • Willingness and ability to work outside of normal hours on occasion (within New Horizon's flexible working arrangements), including work over the Christmas period when required. (E)
  • Willingness to work flexibly in response to changing organisational requirements. (E)

_ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION_

Location

The post is based at:
New Horizon Youth Centre, 68 Chalton Street, London, NW1 1JR. Some outreach work and travel will be required.


Hours of work
The role is part-time.

The post holder will be required to work 3-4 days per week, the exact working pattern to be determined following interview.

Some work over the Christmas period will be required.


Salary
The starting salary for the role is £29, pro rata)


The salary scale is:
AP26 (£29, to AP31 (£34, New Horizon Youth Centre contributes up to 6% to a group personal pension scheme.
