Description
To work in partnership with individuals, families and carers, using a range of assessment methods (e.g. of history-taking; holistic assessment; identifying risk factors; mental health assessments; requesting, undertaking and/or interpreting diagnostic tests; and conducting health needs assessments). To participate in Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) patient reviews in both consultant-led and nurse-led clinics. Demonstrate effective communication skills to support patients to make decisions/ explore options regarding their treatment and care.


To manage a client case load taking patients through a course of SACT Within the specialty of oncology and personal competence (and based on a treatment plan provided by an oncology consultant) provide patients with the appropriate information to obtain signed consent to treatment.

Act as patient advocate for those who have doubts over proposed treatment and those individuals without capacity to consent to treatment Within the specialty of oncology and personal competence, to prescribe medications (including chemotherapy/biotherapy) as an independent prescriber.

To request and interpret timely clinical investigations for patients in order to effectively assess, plan, implement and evaluate course of treatment, e.

X-ray, CT, MRI, tumour markers and appropriate blood tests Management of Central Venous Catheters in accordance with local and national guidelines Act as a lead resource Provide line management for the team, adopting a leadership style that supports, motivates and empowers the nursing team and other healthcare professionals to attain highs standards of patient care and professional development.

Demonstrate team leadership, resilience and determination, managing situations that are unfamiliar, complex or unpredictable and seeking to build confidence in others.

Meet Trust and Divisional targets for line management responsibilities (e.g. appraisals, managing sickness absence).

Ensure a sound knowledge and understanding of Clinical Governance and risk management issues surrounding the ACP role and wider oncological treatment and care.

Role model the values of our organisation, demonstrating a person-centred approach to service delivery and development.


Lead new practice and service redesign solutions in response to oncology patient feedback, evaluation and need, working across boundaries and broadening sphere of influence Critically engage in research activity, adhering to good research practice guidance, so that evidence -based strategies are developed and applied to enhance quality, safety, productivity and value for money.

Demonstrate a commitment to research-based practice and clinical excellence and play an active part in the introduction of research-based change to improve patient centred care.

Act as a role model, educator, supervisor, coach and mentor, seeking to instil and develop the confidence of others and contribute to a culture of organisational learning to inspire future and existing staff:

Provide support, guidance, training for immediate team, assessing and evaluating competence, in order to fulfil clinical governance requirements and retain a skilled workforce.

Recognise service needs and act as a change agent taking a pro-active role in the development of services using research and quality improvement methodology.


Critically appraise and synthesise the outcome of relevant research, evaluation and audit to underpin own practice and inform that of others Be actively involved in and support departmental education programmes.

Work with senior colleagues to identify and support individuals who need to develop their advanced levels of knowledge and skills.
