Product Safety Engineers/Managers

Multiple Thales Locations/Hybrid

Bristol, Cheadle, Templecombe, Glasgow, Crawley, Reading

Main Responsibilities

  • Creation of the project/product safety artefacts
  • Ensure timely delivery of the safety artefacts into the project (safety programme)
  • Creating Safety Assessment/Case
  • Appropriately archiving the Safety Assessment/Case material
  • Supporting the SA/SAM as required at supplier, customer and user safety meetings
  • Ensuring Bids and Projects conform with the Thales UK Policy
  • Planning Bid and Project activities
  • Providing estimates for safety function engineering activities
  • Developing and managing the project Safety Management Plan and gaining approvals
  • Maintaining project Safety Management Plans
  • Undertaking activities in accordance with the agreed Safety Management Plan
  • Identifying Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Policy relating to the product in conjunction with the Project Design Authority (PDA) and Contract Manager and monitoring changes
  • Maintaining the solution safety requirements
  • Reporting progress, expenditure and issues for safety engineering work packages
  • Supporting audits and the investigation of incidents and accidents
  • Providing guidance on safety management to their Business
  • Providing safety deliverables as planned
  • Supporting the projects in generating safety related certifications
  • Tasking Safety Engineers to undertake bid and project safety activities, and
  • Reviewing observations and reports from manufacture, use and maintainers and contributing to the definition of corrective actions to maintain the solution Safety Assessment/Case where necessary.

Skills & knowledge

  • Working knowledge of Product Safety Policies and Safety Management System processes. Has regularly implemented SMS processes to meet project requirements.
  • Working knowledge of safety assessment processes/techniques (FTA, Event Tree, FMECA, RBD, LOPA, QRA) and knows which to implement based on product & stage of the engineering lifecycle.
  • Will have planned, implemented and undertaken safety assessment programmes.
  • Working knowledge of Safety Management Plans and how to implement them as a Work Package.
  • Will have implemented Safety Management Plans for complex products and systems, providing budgets, managing Work Packages and has undertaken roles such as Project Safety Manager
  • Has a good working knowledge of sources of safety requirements (Def Stan, BS EN, ISO, IEC, etc.) and the processes by which they are captured, recorded and managed.
  • Will have managed safety requirement for large complex projects/products and has negotiated safety requirements and targets with customers.
  • Good working knowledge of formal Hazard ID and risk assessment methodologies (HAZID, HAZOP, FHA, BowTies etc.) and knows which is appropriate to use, and how to undertake the assessment.
  • Can provide guidance and advice to projects on the appropriate method of HazID and understands how to create, populate and maintain a hazard log.
  • Will have implemented HazID and risk assessment techniques, chaired HazID and risk analysis meetings and endorsed ALARP and tolerability declarations.
  • Good working knowledge of the structure of Safety arguments/reports/cases and how to structure a system Safety Case Report for complex products (GSN, CAE etc.)
  • Will have reviewed safety arguments/reports/cases for other projects and provided advice to suppliers on requirements.
  • Knowledge of legal procedures that must be followed regarding the process and notification of safety occurrences. Understands how to conduct witness interviews, identify and implement the use of the most appropriate investigation techniques and root causeanalysis.
  • Will have contributed to investigations into occurrences and/or supported a third party (e.g. customers) enquiries.
  • Will have knowledge of competence management processes and has undertaken product safety competency assessments.
  • Will have working knowledge of traditional safety engineering techniques, concepts and tools (BowTieXP, RWB, FaultTree+, eCassandra, DOORS etc.), understands the difference between key types of analysis (quantitative and qualitative) and is aware of emergingsafety engineering techniques.
  • Regularly implements safety techniques, concepts and tools for complex products and can do so independently.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

Ideally
HNC/HND qualification may be acceptable with relevant experience in the technical areas indicated above

**Applicants should be eligible for UK Security Clearance (SC Level)
