Description

RPS is looking for a health impact assessment (HIA) graduate to join our National Infrastructure Planning Team based at our Edinburgh office, with the option of hybrid working.

We are an internationally recognised and leading HIA team with an unrivalled catalogue of project experience across energy, transport, spatial planning, housing, and many other sectors.

We have a strong focus on renewable energy projects and are all about supporting sustainable development.

Our HIA team is at the forefront of developing national and international guidance and good practice. We are regular collaborators with the World Health Organization and professional accreditation bodies, including IEMA. We pride ourselves on delivering quality and achieving win-wins for our clients, public health, and local communities.

We're RPS- our projects are all around you. We define, design and manage projects that create shared value to a complex, urbanising and resource-scarce world. Our people are our success. We need people who share our passion on solving the problems that matter. And where you'll be supported every step of the way. Here is where you come to build a career.

What you will be doing
The work relates primarily to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) health chapters and standalone HIA reports.

You'll be getting hands-on experience conducting HIAs on projects that matter.

You will learn about and support the delivery of HIAs and EIA Health chapters to help projects build-in healthy design principles and avoid health inequalities.

You will have the opportunity to work on developments of all types, from residential to industrial, local to national. A large part of our work is in the renewables sector. The aim is to facilitate sustainable development and improve population health with an emphasis on reducing health inequalities.

You'll be working across the lifecycle of the project, learning how to develop proposals and screen for HIAs, through the various stages of HIA practice (scoping, developing health baselines, engaging with stakeholders, assessing public health evidence, developing recommendations), to producing written outputs that integrate health into project delivery.

You will be working alongside Principal Consultant in Health and Social Impact, Katie Hirono, a leading international expert in HIA.

You will also be supported and mentored in your HIA career by our Director of Health & Social Impacts, Ryngan Pyper.

This job is a great opportunity to learn and develop expert skills in an area at the intersection of impact assessment and public health.

The field is growing rapidly, so there are likely to be good opportunities for career progression.

Who we are looking for
Opportunities to enter and be mentored in the HIA field are rare.

To be considered for our graduate programme you will need to have a master's in public health (MPH) (or equivalent health-related degree) and an interest in HIA, healthy placemaking, and/or health inequalities.

You would also have, or be keen to develop:

  • general knowledge of HIA, healthy urban design principles and health inequalities;
- research skills to interpret and analyse environmental, social and public health data;
- ability to prioritise tasks and work towards deadlines;
- effective communication with strong writing skills; and
- ability to both work with a team and proactively self-lead work with mínimal supervision;

What's in it for you?
At RPS we work as one team to achieve exceptional outcomes, and joining the Graduate Scheme is no different. From early on in your career you'll have exposure to sustainable projects.

Building the foundations of a consultancy career by growing skills, knowledge, and behaviours; and building experience and achievements into real expertise.

We're an accredited training provider - from entry level to master's degree level professional qualifications in leadership & management and executive coaching & mentoring, we support learning and development for everyone.

A personal development plan and a transparent career pathway puts you in the driving seat of your career and you'll be supported as far as you want to go.

We respect one another and recognise the potential and contribution of everyone. You'll be joining a diverse community and a company that puts its people first and prioritises their wellbeing.

What happens next?
Submit your CV and cover-letter explaining your qualifications and interest in HIA.

We understand that at this stage in your career you are unlikely to have HIA experience, so that is not a prerequisite.

If this opportunity suits your career journey, we'd love to hear from you.
