Job description:

AI is bringing about huge changes to society and it is the responsibility of the AI Policy Directorate to work out how Government should respond.

It is a once-in-a-generation moment, and an incredibly fast-paced and exciting environment.

Building on the platform created by the AI Safety Summit hosted by the UK in November 2023, the AI Policy Directorate will continue to play a leading role in providing strategic direction across Government and industry to establish the most trusted and pro-innovation system for AI governance in the world, ensure UK institutions and infrastructure have the necessary capabilities to maintain our strategic advantage, and drive forward our ambitious objectives at home and abroad.

This role sits within the International AI Division, within the AI Policy Directorate.

The division is responsible for the UK's international AI objectives and shaping the global AI landscape in line with UK interests, including the inclusive development of safe, secure and trustworthy AI.

This requires balancing competing international priorities and delivering against high-profile and impactful objectives.

Person specification:

  • The postholder will work in the AI Strategy, Policy and Multilaterals branch of the division and be one of three International AI Team Leaders, each with responsibility for certain elements of bilateral, multilateral and thematic AI policy, as well as working cooperatively to shape and deliver the overall international AI strategy.
  • As well as line management responsibility, there is also opportunity to travel where suitable to deliver against the role's priorities.
  • Whilst the exact portfolio may evolve over time, and will need to be responsive to the fastmoving international AI landscape, currently the postholder is responsible for;
  • Bilateral AI relationships with all nonEuropean nations, including developing new bilateral partnerships with priority countries and building on the recent DSIT Secretary of State trips to Canada and the UAE
  • Multilateral engagement at the OECD and the Global Partnership on AI, two key international organisations through which the UK is influencing global AI policy and governance
  • DSIT's input into the AI for Development / Good agenda, ensuring that the benefits of AI can be realised across the world
  • AI Policy Directorate's input into the tools for trustworthy AI agenda, which includes AI standards and assurance, working closely with teams in DSIT's Standards and Responsible Technology Adoption Unit to align strategy and international engagement
