Trust Doctor in Rheumatology - Fixed Term Vacancy for MT03 ST1/2

The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre

Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre is a prestigious teaching hospital, part of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

We provide academically led acute and specialist rheumatology and orthopaedic services over a large catchment area around Oxfordshire and throughout the UK.

We provide top quality patient care, and world-renowned research across 4 sites:
Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre

John Radcliffe Hospital (Major trauma centre)

Churchill Hospital

Horton Hospital

The centre is housed on the same grounds as the Botnar Research Institute
- leading experts in the field of musculoskeletal research. It also has clinical and research links with the John Radcliffe Hospital Trauma department. All three centres receive support from NIHR and the Medical Research Council. The academic rheumatology department has been recognised as a EULAR Centre of Excellence since 2015. The department provides formal and informal teaching for Oxford University medical undergraduates.


Aims and responsibilities of the post:
The post holder will work as part of a team within the Rheumatology service.


Daily tasks:

RDU - reviewing patients e.g. drug reactions, infections, flares; reviewing blood results; responding to other patient/nursing queries

Ward E rheumatology inpatients.


The Trust comprises four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

Specific weekly tasks:

Monday - 09:00-13:00 - MDT, RDU consultant ward round, radiology meeting. Followed by completing tasks generated by MDT/ward round

Tuesday PM - Professor Luqmani clinic

Tuesday-Thursday - prescribing RDU infusions for the following week (around 60 per week, often generating other jobs e.g. unexpected blood results)

Thursday PM and Friday AM - Rheumatology advice line


Ad hoc:

Acute admissions to ward E

Planned day case admissions to ward E for first infusions

Ad hoc tasks sent by consultants, registrars and nurses e.g. actioning results, telephone reviews, sending prescriptions

Attend other clinics for learning.


On calls:

On call for Orthopaedics 1:15 full shift

08:00-21:00 to clerk/review patients by orthopaedics as required.

08:00-17:00 You are the team leader for any crash calls.

21:00-08:00 Nights
