Description

The post holder will be responsible for developing and managing an educational service which will aim to deliver up to date evidence-based practice, focusing on individual staff need, to support in the delivery of a high standard of care.

This includes practical skills and knowledge and theory which underpin practice.


Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was created on 1 October 2019 following the merger of two adult acute Trusts, Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.


The merger provides an opportunity to reconfigure services in a way that provides the best healthcare services to the city and improves the quality of care and health outcomes that patients experience.

The Trust runs Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool University Dental Hospital and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

  • Clinical Practice


To be an expert clinical practitioner - with the ability to demonstrate skill in the provision of care for patients with Ventilation/Respiratory care needs, displaying clinical competence including but not limited to Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and Tracheostomy care/management.

Participate in the management of patient care by providing hands on 1:1 teaching sessions at the patient's bedside, to enable junior/less experienced staff to develop their skills

Be responsible for own personal learning and practice development, ensuring NMC proficiencies are maintained and up to date practise is being delivered in accordance with

Trust guidelines and government initiatives.


Participate in clinical audit and research to ensure current practice is effective and enables the Ventilation Inpatient Centre to deliver the highest standard of efficient and effective care.


Be visible on the unit and able to make themselves readily available to assist and support staff members with any learning/development issues.


To ensure that the principles that guide staff development reflect the trust commitment to quality, safety and patient experience, and that these are embedded into clinical practice.


  • Education and Professional Development
Promote an effective environment conducive to learning and development, encouraging clinical supervision and reflective practice.

Assist and support newly qualified/ International recruits with the transition into the clinical environment.

Develop training and action plans for underperforming staff members.

This will also include reviewing existing action plans and liaising with senior Nurse Leaders to take appropriate steps to ensuring staff members have the support /guidance they require.

Liaise with other education resource initiatives e.g. Simulation suite and external providers to develop and maintain regular educational sessions.

Assist the clinical team in producing Respiratory/Ventilation specific competencies.


Work collaboratively with the Nursing team to identify areas of educational need, prioritise these areas in the development of an educational programme implementing best practice.

Assist in the completion of a training needs analysis to help staff identify gaps in knowledge and skill.

Implement a comprehensive development programme for new starters/ preceptors to give structure to learning and development within the clinical area
- promoting specific modules of learning that should be undertaken to enhance and develop the staff member at trigger points throughout their career on the Ventilation Inpatient Centre.


Support Nurse Mangers with ensuring mandatory training and medical device competencies are completed and staff members are confident with all medical equipment used in the clinical area.

To ensure clinical staff within the Ventilation Inpatient Centre/ Respiratory meet CQC/LQA and peer review training requirements.


Benchmark nursing practice to ensure all staff members are following the Trust's policies and procedures to deliver a high standard of care.

Develop a resource bank/library
- holding Ventilation/Respiratory specific evidence
- based practice. Highlighting educational resources displaying best practice.

Maintain accurate up to date records of training, highlighting dates of completion and re-assessments.
