Job summary:

The Government Security Function (GSF) oversees the delivery of protective security across Government.

Our Mission is to enable Government to protect citizens and provide vital public services by understanding and managing security risks.

We set the strategy and standards for Government Security, monitor departmental security performance, manage pan-government security incidents, support the delivery of key security capabilities and lead the Government Security Profession.

The Government Security Group (GSG) is the centre of the Function, based within the Cabinet Office.

GSG is transforming the Government's approach to protective security to ensure it is fit to meet the challenges of the digital age.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced, dynamic team, with a breadth of stakeholders including in other Government departments, the National Technical Authorities and the Agencies, and to contribute to delivering improved security across Government.


The Cyber Defence directorate covers all aspects of Defensive Cyber Security for Government including strategy, policy, assurance, red teaming, capability development, and the operational deliverables of incident, risk and vulnerability management.

We also manage investment from the National Cyber Security Programme, and manage the implementation of the Government Cyber Security Strategy.

The Cyber Assurance team is designing and implementing the new cyber assurance regime for government, GovAssure, which is an updated approach for understanding and improving government cyber resilience.

It utilises the NCSC's CAF framework is currently being piloted with a small number of departments, with full rollout in 2023.

The team is dynamic, and works closely with Engagement and Operations staff to understand departmental challenges as well as assisting in some of the response activities.

This is an exciting opportunity to come and help shape delivery of the new regime and roll it out across government next year.


Job description:


The post holder will be responsible for joining the team delivering the scheme, which in the short term will involve evaluation of pilots, working with departments to understand how implementation will be run across their Arms Length Bodies and partner organisations; working with our security partners to prepare industry and working on our data strategy for interpreting and managing results.

Specifically, when GovAssure launches it will use a structured process which will involve GSG participation and this post will take part in workshops and decision points to understand how the scheme will be implemented, with particular focus on System scoping and departmental mitigations post report.


Person specification:


Essential skills and experience

  • You will be comfortable working in a technical environment and you will have experience of working with Cyber in an enterprise context.

Desirable skills and experience

  • Experience of working in national security.
  • Working across organisations with a range of stakeholders.

Level of Security Clearance required:


  • SC existing security clearance is not required however there must be willingness to undergo SC. This may also include DV if required.
