Waste Education Officer:

Job description

This is new and exciting role striving to promote waste minimisation, reuse and maximising recycling rates, by working with residents, community groups and schools across the district.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys engaging with the community and is competent at producing informative and clear educational content.

The role would suit a self-starter who can manage their own workload.

Effective communication skills are key to the role, as you will be engaging with our contractors Ubico who deliver waste services to over 55,000 properties, members of the public and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop projects and campaigns to educate residents, schools, and visitors about the correct use of the kerbside waste and recycling schemes, via outreach community work.
  • Increase the amount of uncontaminated recycling produced and aim to influence behaviour change, by actively engaging residents to be more efficient with their household waste and recycling, through effective marketing campaigns.
  • Create a communications plan and link with national organisations to promote recycling figures, whilst seeking ways to further improve waste performance.
  • Create engaging educational materials, including presentations, brochures, social media posts, and other online resources, to support waste education programs.
  • Participate in the county wide waste communications group and local project groups to drive collective promotional campaigns.
  • Organize and participate in community events, fairs, and workshops to promote waste reduction and recycling.
  • Develop a close working relationship with SDC Housing Team to improve waste outcomes for our tenants.
  • Undertake site visit and inspections, monitoring performance of the Multi Service Contract (MSC).

Requirements:

  • A relevant industry related qualification in waste/recycling or suitable experience in this field.
  • Proven track record in one or more of the following, delivering marketing campaigns, educational programs, preferably in waste management, or recycling.
  • Able to develop and prioritise own work plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver educational materials, including presentations, brochures, and online resources.
  • Strong knowledge of waste management practices, recycling technologies and environmental conservation principles.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication skills and presentation skills with the ability to engage and inspire diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to plan and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Good literary and financial skills
  • An understanding of administrative processes and systems
  • Ability to understand service budgets and promote the importance of efficiencies.
  • Experience of working with the public and partnerships
  • A genuine passion for environment sustainability and waste reduction
This role is based at Ebley Mill (Council HQ) with potential for hybrid/flexible working.

This is a politically restricted post.
