An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent Band 4 Failsafe Officer to support our Antenatal and New-born Screening Team.


The role of the Failsafe Officer is to facilitate the implementation and monitoring of the failsafe systems within the National Antenatal and Newborn (ANNB) Screening Programmes Framework.

The successful applicant will work closely with the wider Multi-Disciplinary team, the local Public Health England Team and regional network to reduce the risk of harm of missed screening opportunities for mothers and babies.

Work with the Midwifery specialist teams to;

Establish (as required) and effectively manage and maintain antenatal and Newborn screening failsafe databases related to all of the Antenatal and Newborn Screening Programmes.

Ensuring the eligible population have an outcome recorded for each relevant screening programme.

This will require the post holder to follow up where data is missing and to request repeat samples if required.

Provide accurate and timely statistical screening data to the Antenatal and Newborn screening team and other colleagues as required

Assist with activities aimed at maintaining and improving relevant key performance indicators for the Antenatal and Newborn Screening programmes.


Work alongside the Screening team to liaise with families, external providers and the multi-professional teams to ensure a quality service.

  • The role of the failsafe officer is to facilitate the implementation, monitoring and to maintain safe and quality assured National Antenatal and Newborn (ANNB) Screening Programmes. The purpose of the role is to support the Antenatal and Newborn Screening Lead Midwife and to carry out failsafe activities that ensure the screening processes are completed in a timely way, meeting national standards and reducing risk of harm or missed screening to mothers and babies for which Lancashire Teaching Hospitals are responsible.
  • Ensure accurate and methodical collation and data entry into databases or national systems, to evidence and ensure that all women and their babies are offered antenatal screening and newborn screening, including Downs screening, Sickle Cell and Thalassemia, Fetal Anomaly, Infectious Diseases and the Newborn Bloodspot and Newborn Physical Examination.
  • Assist the process of patient tracking including booking all necessary appointments and booking interpreters if required and following up / chasing results.
  • Respond expediently to abnormal results following investigative treatments, highlighting them in person to the ANNB Screening Coordinator to avoid delay.
  • Enter all ANNB screening patient information, examinations, results/outcomes and appointments accurately onto the Antenatal and Newborn (ANNB) screening database.
  • Use multiple clinical and nonclinical information systems and databases to extract, understand and coordinate patients' pathways and care and to identify eligible population.
  • Record, maintain and store information relating to the delivery of care services either electronically or on paper and in a timely manner according to service standards.
  • Produce Excel based reports for the Antenatal Screening Programme
  • On receipt of test / investigation results, retrieve relevant patient notes for relevant clinical teams as required.
  • Responsible for checking the quality of data entered on the failsafe system and filing systems and ensure national standards are maintained.
  • Analyse and present data collected as required.
Responsible for maintaining a call record and response log for all enquiries
