1.

To support the specific technical and clerical duties, working with Biomedical Scientists as part of a team, to facilitate the smooth running of the Point of Care Testing service.


  • To prepare and distribute quality assurance material for analysis by Point of Care test users, and prepare and distribute commercial quality assurance material for the Chemistry sections of the Combined Laboratory.
  • To input and collate quality assurance data, and manage quality assurance schemes through web based software.
  • To supervise, mentor and support Assistant Technical Officers and other point of care team staff.
  • To take an active role in the support of the Trust's Point of Care Testing Policy (POCT)
  • To perform regular audit of all point of care testing processes.
  • To maintain and troubleshoot a range of point of care testing equipment in a number of different areas of the trust and external sites
  • To maintain the department's quality management system for POCT activities and manage POCT databases.
  • To provide training for point of care devices and tests to a wide range of trust staff and staff working at external sites covered by the service.
  • Be part of a team responsible for the routine maintenance of specific analysers, equipment or tests e.g. Blood Gas analysers, glucose meters and other POCT equipment.
  • Ensure point of care testing stock levels are monitored and maintained and be familiar with the principles of stock rotation.
  • Troubleshoot errors discovered by or reported to the POCT team. Escalate problems to the manufacturer where appropriate.
  • Contact and/or liaise with engineers or representatives of companies who supply POCT equipment.
  • To prepare samples to be used in the quality assurance schemes for POCT and chemistry sections of the laboratory.
  • To assist in the collection and data input for these various schemes into laboratory software and the production of reports for the ward users.
  • Demonstrate the use of POCT to other NHS staff
  • To assist in the administration of departmental National External Quality Assurance schemes, including the preparation, distribution, result collation and sending reports back to the scheme organisers via fax or internet.
  • Will identify and address poor external quality assurance performance with reference to established criteria.
  • To perform regular audits of point of care sites for documentation, performance of quality control, and good record keeping.
The Combined Laboratory is located on levels 6 and 7 in Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. We are a large Department employing over 150 members of staff comprising medical, scientific, ancillary and clerical grades.

The Combined Laboratory provides a full range of Clinical Chemistry, Haematology and Coagulation, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Stem Cell bank and Blood Transfusion.

Detailed information relating to blood transfusion is covered in the Hospital Transfusion Manual, which is available on all wards and departments.

The Department also offers a comprehensive range of tests through a Point of Care Testing service.


Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.
