The Post
This is a senior post delivering advanced biogeochemistry technical skills for academic and other colleagues within the Faculty and leading and managing a team of biogeochemistry technical specialists.
As a key member of the Faculty the postholder will work with the Technical Manager to ensure the optimal deployment of biogeochemistry technical specialists across the Faculty, that technical services are delivered to the highest standard when and where they are needed, that technical skills are kept up-to-date and that the highest health and safety standards are maintained at all times.
The Biogeochemistry Technical Specialist team will support academics and other project leaders with all aspects of biogeochemistry including soil, rock, water and ice analysis and ecology.
Biogeochemistry Technical Specialists will use a range of experimental techniques including thin section preparation, microscopy, mass spectrometry and elemental analysis.
Additionally the post provides health and safety management and advice for the Faculty, implementing appropriate systems and risk management practices.
The post also coordinates the activities of those involved in health and safety across the Faculty (such as health and safety coordinators and fire wardens) to ensure all legal and best practice responsibilities are met.
The role will support both the Faculty's learning and teaching and its research and enterprise agendas.Description of Duties
People Management
- Manage and supervise a team which may include nontechnical staff. Be responsible for recruiting, monitoring and supporting the performance management and development (including appraisal) of team members to ensure that individual contributions are maximised
- Act as the lead for all health and safety activities in the Faculty including acting as Radiation Protection
- Contribute to the development of teaching and/or research, or to meeting customer requirements, through the designing and testing of apparatus/equipment/systems or usage of specialist machines/equipment or the development of new techniques
- Advising on future physical resource requirements within own area general/specific equipment, apparatus, space etc
- Responsible for the technical organisation and/or operation of advanced scientific/technical work requiring specialist skills, techniques and knowledge
- Work with novel techniques and/or procedures, typically in support of research activity
- Ensure the security of buildings/plant/machinery in own area
- Ensure compliance with legal, health & safety standards in the area of responsibility
- Generate original ideas and innovative solutions through the provision of specialist know
- Carry out quantitative and qualitative analysis and contribute to the interpretation of
- Organise the provision of a technical service through the daytoday organisation and technical supervision of a medium sized work area/workshop/laboratory or a research section
- Ensure work is carried out and performed to the required standard, taking the necessary followup measures to ensure effective performance
- Monitor project status and take remedial action where necessary to ensure that projects are delivered on time
- Gather and analyse requirements for systems in order to identify optimum
- Under the direction of a senior staff member, monitor the budgets of the work area/research area/grant, making sure it operates effectively within budget constraints and maintaining appropriate financial records
- Ensure maintenance of stocks of equipment and consumables within
- Liaison and communication with other University faculties and departments as well as outside bodies
- Contribute to developments in policies/procedures/plans in own work area
- Continue to develop depth or breadth of knowledge in area of expertise/responsibility, keep abreast of technical developments, and may be recognised as a technical expert in a particular area
Essential Criteria
Qualifications:
- Relevant university degree or equivalent
- Typically have significant experience of relevant technical/scientific work and demonstrable experience of leading health and safety activity for a large department, and demonstrating development through involvement in progressively more demanding work/roles
