Oswestry School is an independent, co-educational day & boarding school, with a 11-18 senior school of c.400 pupils (120 of whom board) and a 4-11 Prep School of c.120 pupils.

Hockey Specialist (Part-Time)
Oswestry School is seeking a highly motivated and energetic Level 2 (or equivalent) qualified hockey coach from September self employed status preferred but will consider employed status.
They would be available to engage in the extra-curricular programme as well as our curricular sessions, and the applicant must also be available to oversee matches on a Saturday morning (both home and away).
Our focus in the hockey programme is to enable any interested student to aim for and reach their potential, with a focus on mastering the fundamentals and the team approach to the game, whilst also developing their skills and capabilities.
We have made great progress in recent years with the school becoming increasingly competitive and having several individuals achieve local and county honours.
The interest and the commitment of the pupil to succeed are clear, and we are looking for someone to join in continuing this progress in the years to come.
- Knowledgeable understanding of both correct technique and how to break it down and rebuild it to achieve a finished article quickly
- Creative able to think outside the box to be able to help athletes look at problems from an alternative perspective to get to the final goal if necessary
- Positive/Dynamic bring a positive "buzz" to the pitch so there's an "energy"
- Adaptable able to change practices and own mindset to achieve desired outcomes
- Gameorientated
- Prefers to use gamebased scenarios to deliver sessions rather than static drills generates its situational issues and problems that the pupils can work through with the coach's assistance
- Playerfocused less didactic and more questionbased approach to get the girls to find their own answers through funnelling (more prevalent in higher level hockey coaches due to the course training)
- Driven wants to succeed as much as the pupil wants to the girls & boys are usually very driven, but a defined focus and goal helps to streamline their attitudes, behaviours and performances
The successful coach will join a team of teachers and coaches of individual sports who work closely together to provide a well-balanced, aspirational and forward-thinking sporting programme, ensuring consistency in pedagogy and outreach across the faculty.
They will also work with and support a wide range of staff including internal and external coaches and teachers involved in our co-curricular programme who will need guidance and support.
There will be an expectation to immerse themselves into our full fixtures programme during the week and on the weekends.
Another significant element of this role will be to strengthen and further develop club links in their sport to enhance player development and pathways.
The role requires and involves the following;- Relevant coaching qualifications or equivalent experience
- Coaching and running teams
- Officiating as appropriate
- Coaching groups in specialised topic areas
- Being involved in afterschool and weekend fixtures
- Being an integral part of the school community
- Experience in teaching and coaching children and young people
- Good communication skills
- An ability to work on your initiative
- An ability to work as part of a team
- The willingness to drive a school minibus will be essential
