Department:

The Department of Psychology at the University of York is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on a project funded by the Leverhulme Trust awarded to Dr.

Bailey House, in collaboration with Prof.

Katie Slocombe:
"The Development of Normative Prosociality across Diverse Societies". The project explores how the development of cognitive capacities in infancy (e.g. joint attention, social imitation, prosociality) supports the later development of normative and prosocial behaviours in early childhood. We do this using both longitudinal and cross-sectional methods with children living in Britain and Uganda. This position is for up to two-years (24 month) position, with an ideal start date of August 1st 2023. However, there is some flexibility as to the start date.

Role:

You will join our research team and work alongside two PhD students on this project.

You will be responsible for managing the overall project and taking ownership over at least one of the project's planned research studies.

You may be responsible for some data collection with 5-10 year-old children in the first 4-6 months of the post, which will involve learning experimental protocols and training/supervising undergraduate research assistants, and may require weekend and evening working.

You will be responsible for processing and coding video data, and training/supervising undergraduate research assistants to code. You will analyse project data using multilevel regression (e.g. GLMM using R), and first-author manuscripts for publication.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed:

  • You must have a PhD and first degree in psychology, anthropology or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of experimental psychology and of psychological research techniques are essential, with knowledge of longitudinal developmental and crosscultural research methods also desirable.
  • You will have strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with undergraduate research assistants and the ability to work with young children. Experience of working effectively with young children is desirable.
  • You will have the ability to conduct coding of behaviour using video recordings and computer software and use multilevel regression models/generalised linear mixed models. As well as the ability to write up and present research to a high standard.
  • You will have strengths in individual and collaborative research and skill in the use of statistical packages to analyse complex datasets. The ability to use R statistical software for multilevel regression analysis, and Observer (behavioural coding software) are also desirable.
  • You should have good attention to detail, commitment to high quality research, a collaborative ethos, and enthusiasm for the research area and project.
  • You should have strong planning ability, an ability to meet deadlines, and a commitment to acquiring new knowledge and skills.
