The Times_ and _The Sunday Times_ are seeking an assistant editor for the news pictures department.


The job requires you to work with a team of picture editors and researchers, who search more than 50,000 images a day and investigate news stories to source exclusive pictures.


Responsibilities

  • Work as part of the backbench team of senior editors to produce The Times and The Sunday Times on multiple platforms
  • Presenting at news conference, highlighting exclusive pictures and original pictureled stories
  • Investigating news stories to source exclusive pictures, as well as producing standalone picture packages
  • Managing relationships with photographers, agencies and other external contacts to source or commission original, distinctive images
  • Giving story leads and ideas to the news desk
  • Able to work across all picture research shifts, including home news, wires, digital, foreign and business and able to work flexibly across platforms
  • Supporting the news pictures editor, section editors and designers to work in the most effective and efficient way possible
  • Able to work under pressure on edition, as well as contribute to longerterm projects
  • Proactively researching suitable content ideas and putting together strong packages that engage editors at morning and afternoon news conference and through the day
  • Having a clear understanding of the editorial and visual objectives of The Times and The Sunday Times news pages and understanding how pictures contribute to that
  • Building positive relationships with editors and their departments
  • This job requires regular working in the newsroom

Skills and experience

  • A qualification or strong experience in journalism or photography
  • Experience working in the media, especially on a news desk or picture agency
  • Experience establishing strong working relationships and building credibility with senior managers
  • A proven track record of influencing editorial colleagues, leading thinking and generating ideas
  • Creative problemsolving
  • Highly organised and able to work in a fastpaced, changing environment
  • A collaborative, flexible working style with experience working in partnership with design and production teams
  • Strong understanding of usage rights, permissions and copyright
