Equality and Diversity - Department for Education

Skills is a top priority for the Prime Minister and Secretary of State. The Post-16 Skills and Analysis Directorate in DfE is leading the Government's programme to reform our post-16 skills system.

These reforms are at the heart of the government's agenda to level up and improve economic outcomes across the country.

The Skills Strategy and Delivery division leads the Department's 2030 strategy on skills, oversees delivery of our skills reform agenda and assures spending for the Skills Group.

Combined, this ensures clarity of vision and objectives, alignment across the Group, DfE and wider government, and effective use of resources to deliver.

The division offers a collaborative working culture, supporting collective working and ensuring stretching and exciting work is distributed across teams.

As Portfolio Management Officer you will play a critical role in the management of the portfolio.

This will require a high performing individual that can coordinate relationships with stakeholders, leading on briefings and communications whilst also providing secretariat support for senior decision-making Boards.

Job description:

  • To provide support to the portfolio through effective stakeholder management and portfolio governance.
  • Work closely with ministerial offices to ensure programme decisions are planned and tracked
  • Assist on commissions from across the department and OGDs, whilst also building and maintaining effective relationships across multiple teams including HMT and No10 Delivery Unit.

Person specification:

Essential criteria:

  • Ability to work strategically across a wide portfolio.
  • Ability to deliver at pace.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Benefits:

  • Alongside your salary of £32,222, Department for Education contributes £8,699 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Find out what benefits a Civil Service Pension provides.

Applicants currently holding a permanent post in the Civil Service should note that, if successful, their salary on appointment would be determined by the Department's transfer / promotion policies.

As a member of the DfE, you will be entitled to join the highly competitive Civil Service Pension Scheme, which many experts agree is one of the most generous in the UK.

You will have 25 days leave, increasing by 1 day every year to a maximum of 30 days after five years' service.

In addition, all staff receive the King's Birthday privilege holiday and 8 days' bank and public holidays.

We offer flexible working arrangements, such as job sharing, term-time working, flexi-time and compressed hours.

Most DfE employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending at least 60% of their time in an office or work setting.

Changes to these working arrangements are available in exceptional circumstances but must be agreed with the line manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Travel to your primary office location will not be paid for by DfE, but costs for travel to an office which is not your main location will be covered.

As an organisation, which exists to support education and lifelong learning, we offer our staff excellent professional development opportunities.
