SPANISH LANGUAGE ASSISTANT From September 2023, for 10 months.


The majority of work is with pupils in the Senior School but there is also the opportunity to work with pupils in Years 5 and 6 in our Junior School.


The post holder must have the right to work in the UK, as this cannot be facilitated through the school.

A degree in Languages will be an advantage.

The postholder will be expected, as the main part of their duties, to:

  • work together with a teacher in the classroom
- work on their own with small groups of pupils to introduce basic language or improve linguistic ability, with a focus on oral skills. The potential of printmaking and stencilling.
- help to prepare pupils for oral examinations
- develop lesson plans and extra-curricular activities (e.g. lunch time clubs) focussed on their country's culture, suited to particular age-groups
- support our exchange programme, currently with a school in Pamplona.

General duties

  • To participate in appropriate meetings with the Head of Spanish
  • To support departmental activities such as plays, tapas outings, visits to the theatre or to the cinema
  • To attend all relevant INSET days and any relevant external courses recommended by the Head of Spanish
  • Helping to organise events connected with the Spanish language such as tortilla workshops, Twitter feeds, karaoke, Christmas competitions. Your enthusiasm and creativity is always most welcome and much appreciated by the students.
  • Helping with classroom displays to promote Spanish
  • As an ambassador for your country, you will be promoting your language and culture at all times by stimulating interest and excitement in language learning by providing valuable assistance to the Spanish Department staff.

Management and administration

  • Planning appropriately for lessons and giving feedback on pupils to the class teacher, as appropriate
  • Reporting pupil absence in accordance with School procedure
  • Reporting pupil concerns to the Head of Spanish
  • Attending a weekly meeting with the Head of Spanish to plan and coordinate lessons.

Key responsibilities - general:

To share in the responsibility for maintaining high standards of discipline, courtesy and appearance among the pupils, while promoting their welfare, safety and happiness;

  • To behave at all times with an awareness of the ambassadorial role that teaching at KES entails;
  • To attend meetings as required (eg Open Morning on a Saturday in September/October).

Education and qualifications_

Teaching experience_

Some teaching experience is desirable.

You should have experience of working with young people in some capacity and should have some knowledge of how to enthuse, lead and manage groups.

Applicants must be motivated to work with young people, be able to form and maintain appropriate relationships with pupils and establish personal boundaries, have emotional resilience and be able to maintain good order.

You will be thorough in preparing lessons and in assessing and monitoring progress. You will keep full records of the material covered in conversation lessons.

Personal qualities_

The successful applicant will be a native speaker of Spanish or entirely at home in a bilingual environment. Applicants will be personable, of smart appearance and have good social skills. They will be organised, punctual and efficient in organising their workload and managing their time effectively. They will be competent in the use of IT. They will work well in a team and be responsive to advice and guidance.
