We are seeking an Accounts Payable Supervisor to join the Finance Team here at Historic England.

The role is responsible for supervising the accurate processing of all data to ensure payments are made to suppliers, grant recipients and staff within given service levels, using various financial systems.

What you will be doing


You will support the Accounts Payable Assistants in accurately processing supplier invoices, grants, payment requests and associated transactions (including BACS rejects, cancelled and uncleared cheques), in line with desk procedures.

You will assist in ensuring the efficient running of the purchase ledger module and associated processes, including but not limited to invoice processing and query handling, grants processing and month
- and year-end processing.

The role is responsible for the undertaking of daily payment run routines and managing exceptions.

Check and authorise sundry supplier payments and authorise online payments within permitted limits, ensuring BACS rejects and cancelled cheques are dealt with in line with process.


You will prepare transparency reporting and prompt payment statistics, supervise the daily workload of the Accounts Payable Assistants and support the Accounts Payable Manager with the management of the Accounts Payable Assistants.


You will provide support to the Accounts Payable Manager, gaining an understanding of the various activities, ensuring all activities are undertaken in line with KPIs, check and seek to resolve the accuracy of control reports, seek to identify opportunities for process improvement and assist with the implementation of any relevant projects or programmes, including assisting in user acceptance testing in relevant systems.

  • Customer service experience and building good relationships
  • Achieving targets and meeting deadlines
  • Understanding of processes and explaining these to users
