Activities and Responsibilities of the Post

Principle Purpose of the role


Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies Joint Forensic Services Department provide a vital supporting role to operational policing which directly impacts on crime reduction and detection.

As a Forensic Support Officer, you will effectively and flexibly undertake the range of functions designated as forensic support activity to enhance the investigative outcomes of both Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies


This will include:

collation of forensic hit packages and performance information, management of prisoner DNA samples, processing of invoices, use of the Forensic Services Case Management System and support to Photographic and Imaging.


Main Activities of the Role

  • Check received invoices against delivery notes, code invoice for processing by Finance and update relevant databases/records
  • Order and maintain forensic and photographic supplies for use across both forces, including various kits as required
  • Receive and process frozen DNA prisoner samples from Police Investigation Centres (PIC). Check against and update the Police National Computer (PNC) and other databases
  • Collate performance data for all forensic support activity, including that pertaining to the Home Office data return
  • Collate all forensic hits (DNA, fingerprint, footwear and other), research each for validity and potentially linked scenes and allocate to the appropriate officer to deal. Ensure that relevant databases are updated and that hits are actioned in a timely fashion
  • Collate footwear impressions from detainees and crime scenes, code using recognised system and link scenes using pattern matching and other intelligence
  • Take possession of and check exhibits from officers and staff in both forces and from external providers, maintaining full continuity and challenging incorrect or inappropriate submissions. Coordinate collection and delivery by forensic providers and, where required, collect/deliver exhibits from/to police stations and other locations
  • Undertake ISO quality audits as required
  • Undertake all photographic administration including the production of identification and warrant cards and the processing of digital images, some of which may be distressing in nature
  • Any other duties that are commensurate with the role and grade as may be requested by management

Person Specification
We are looking for applicants who can offer the following attributes:

  • It is essential that applicants meet the following criteria:
  • GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above or demonstrate equivalent numeracy and literacy skills
  • Previous administrative experience
  • Attention to detail, in particular in relation to collating information and checking invoices/documentation
  • Demonstrate good communication skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to undertake own workload whilst effectively responding to adhoc requests
  • Full driving licence and the ability to travel within the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk
It is desirable that applicants meet the following criteria:

  • Experience of working within a forensic environment and using forensic databases
  • Knowledge of exhibit integrity and continuity procedures
  • Experience of using the Police National Computer (PNC)
Hours of work are 37 hours per week. This post is offered on a permanent basis.
