Operations Assistant:


The Fleet Operations Team is responsible for the legal and compliant operation of all Council owned or leased vehicles and the work of the team is critical to ensure the safety of our drivers and the public.


To achieve this, some of the duties which would be undertaken are to include; monitoring of vehicle compliance data and specific tasks in association with the vehicle defect reporting system, undertaking basic vehicle roadworthiness inspections and authorising vehicle maintenance repairs together with negotiating associated costs to achieve best value for the Council.


The Council operates a wide and varied fleet of vehicles and plant including vans, minibuses, gritters, tippers, mowers and sweepers.

The Fleet Operations are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and flexible person, and holder of a full UK driving licence, to join the small, busy team which manages the full spectrum of legal and compliance requirements for operating the Councils vehicle fleet.

A City and Guilds Level 3 (or equivalent) motor vehicle engineer, together with good IT skills and an excellent attendance record is essential for this role.


This post reports to the Principal Fleet Operations Officer and will focus on monitoring aspects of Operator Licence compliance, monitoring/approval of vehicle maintenance repairs and costs, and defect reporting/rectification which underpin the operation of the fleet.


This will typically include:

  • Undertaking basic vehicle roadworthiness checks (in and away from a workshop environment)
  • Monitoring and approving vehicle maintenance work
  • Negotiating vehicle maintenance costs with the Contractor
  • Maintaining database records
  • Vehicle defect report monitoring
  • Operator Licence compliance monitoring
  • Providing technical and legal advice to Services regarding the operation of vehicles
  • Assisting with regular Compliance checks (Gate Checks)
  • Handling of internal and external calls
  • Written communication across all levels of the organisations
An excellent knowledge and background in vehicle maintenance is essential. Knowledge and experience of working with HGV's would be an advantage.

This role requires a combination of mobile working together with desk-based duties.

There will be a heavy focus on engaging with Services and drivers to bring about behavioural change and ensure that Council vehicles are legally operated at all times, whilst also managing day to day approval of vehicle maintenance work and the associated costs.

To facilitate the duties of this role, a shared Council van will be made available to the post-holder.
