Job summary:


We are currently looking for a
Head of Data Analytics and Machine Learning
to join our Scientific Data and Insight
Team within the
Safety and Surveillance Group**.

This is a
full-time opportunity, on a
permanent basis. The role will be based in 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf London, E14 4PU. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.

Government departments and agencies are working towards implementing a minimum 60% attendance in office sites.


We are currently implementing a flexible, hybrid way of working, with a minimum of 4 days per month working on site to enable the collaboration and contact with partners and stakeholders needed to deliver MHRA business.

Attendance on site is driven by business needs so depending on the nature of the role, this can flex up to 8 days a month, with the remainder of time worked either remotely or in the office.

Some roles will need to be on site more regularly. Remote working is potentially available for some specific roles. Please discuss this with the recruiting manager before accepting an appointment.

The Safety and Surveillance Group brings together into a single integrated structure expertise on the safety of all medical products with enforcement capabilities.

These functions are supported by the Agency's data and evidence generating capabilities complementing our signal generating abilities delivered via the common vigilance platform SafetyConnect.

Job description:


What's the role?


The Agency is facing a rapidly evolving external environment characterised by increasingly advanced medical products utilised within a complex health system.

In addition, increasing volumes of heterogeneous and multimodal health data are available and new approaches will be needed to analyse these data at scale.

The role holder will ensure that the Agency has the technical capabilities in place to deliver innovative data science and machine learning solutions which align with our strategic goals.

The postholder will provide both operational and strategic leadership to a team of specialist staff.

The role holder will lead the design and delivery of novel analytical approaches to interrogate data sets and improve, and potentially automate, processes and reporting.


The Data Analytics and Machine Learning team will integrate and analyse data relating to medicines and medical devices across there lifecycle, necessitating extensive cross-functional working both within Safety and Surveillance and with teams in the HealthCare Quality and Access (HQA) Group and the Scientific Research and Innovation (SRI) Group.


The role holder will develop strategic links with key external stakeholders to leverage additional sources of safety information and will develop and maintain relationships with other global regulators to ensure a systematic approach to medical product safety.


Key responsibilities:


  • Provide professional leadership to a team of data scientists, ensure their continuing development, provide visible leadership, and achieve performance which aligns with the strategic goals of the Agency. Develop and drive the strategic direction and priorities of the function.
