Opportunity to work within a large geotechnical design team, from Apprentices to Principal Engineering Managers, alongside a multidisciplinary team (150 No. staff) delivering technical input to infrastructure projects within the highways, rail and rivers sectors.


Amey Consulting is based out of our offices on Malone Road in Belfast, however we offer hybrid working alongside flexible working patterns.

Our geotechnical team in Belfast works on exciting projects with a variety of local clients including the Department for Infrastructure (Roads and Rivers) and Translink (Northern Ireland Railways) with opportunities to work remotely on large schemes across the UK for National Highways and Network Rail.

In addition, we can offer excellent mentoring opportunities for staff working towards chartership with their relevant professional bodies (ICE, CIHT, CGeol, IEI).


What is the purpose of this role?
To provide support to a Senior and/or Principal Engineer within a ground engineering design team to ensure;
- technically sound design solutions are produced, including all associated reporting (particularly CD 622), ensuring compliance with all British Standards and Eurocode 7;
- delivery of geotechnical projects to programme, within budget and to the quality required; and
- guidance is provided for less experienced staff and professional development/training is actively pursued.


What will this role involve?

  • Undertake a wide range of geotechnical design work, fully compliant to Eurocode
  • Work under minimum supervision and competent to check the work of others
  • Scope, plan, supervise and manage effective ground investigations to facilitate all project design requirements
  • Supervise and offer guidance to less experienced or junior staff
  • Planning, supervision and delivery of effective ground investigations
  • Review and check feasibility studies, outline designs and detailed designs, factual and interpretive reports, geotechnical appraisals / assessments and other technical documents
  • Development of engineering solutions
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with all external and internal parties to enhance the reputation of the company and organisational business unit
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, particularly the CDM Regulations
  • Supervise subcontractors and engage in client and thirdparty liaison
  • Support the preparation of bids and delivery of services on other contracts, when required

What are we looking for?

  • BSc, BEng, MEng or MSc in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical/Geological Science
  • Approaching Chartered Engineer status (CEng, CGeol or equivalent) with a minimum of 3 years postgraduate experience
  • Computer literate and thoroughly conversant with MS office suite and geotechnical design software
  • Demonstrable experience in rail and/or highways
  • Demonstrable experience of the design process and team management
  • Experience in ground investigation and geotechnical design
  • Good communication skills dealing with clients, third parties and the public
  • Client focused approach to service delivery
