To be a member of the Domestic Team, and assist the Domestic team in maintaining agreed levels of cleanliness and hygiene throughout St Helena.

This role operates in an emotional environment where the majority of a working day is in the company of terminally ill patients and their families and therefore requires sensitivity and confidentiality.

The hospice can be busy, noisy and unpredictable at times requiring change of activity at short notice.

Due to the nature of the role being based at the Hospice with access to patient areas, the wearing of PPE is a requirement and a Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS) will be requested.

Main duties of the role

  • Assist the Domestic team with cleaning functions around Hospice premises including the Learning and Development Centre, Day Centre and The Hospice (using specialist equipment as required)
  • Assist with the general deep cleaning of floors and deep cleaning in the kitchen areas.
  • Report any relevant information regarding the needs of patients to the Domestic staff
  • Undertake the removal of general and clinical waste into designated bins.
  • Assist with the washing, drying, ironing and the returns of patients clothing, kitchen items, towels/sheets, curtains or soft furnishing. Laundry duties may include infectious washes and moving soiled laundry into the laundry room or to the laundry cages (infectious and noninfectious).
  • Assis with the movement and arrangement of furniture as requested by the Domestic supervisorUse of stepladder following the Working at Heights procedureMaintain confidentiality and data protection at all times
  • Maintain and participate in prevention of cross infection and infection control in accordance with St Helena policies and procedures
Experience & qualifications required

  • Experience of working within a team
  • Experience in a domestic role would be useful
  • Understanding of cleaning equipment.
  • Knowledge of COSHH would be useful
  • Manual Handling
  • Good verbal communication with people at all levels e.g. management, volunteers, staff, patients and the public and the ability to listen
  • Sensitive to the needs of others.
