Job Description:


The Role:


As a Senior Urban Designer, with a relevant urban design qualification and relevant project experience, you will join our London team to support senior colleagues in the production of masterplans, urban design guidance, planning strategies, design & access statements and capacity studies for strategic planning and urban design commissions for public and private sector clients.

You will have experience working on residential, mixed-use and regeneration projects in a UK context.

You will work closely with planning colleagues, so an appreciation of the UK planning system and policy framework and the current planning agenda and key issues is an advantage.

You will work as an integral member of multi-disciplinary teams on interesting assignments including neighbourhood plans, residential-led masterplanning and regional and national strategies.


Current projects include:

  • Sub-regional and city-scale strategic masterplanning and planning projects in Europe and the UK;
  • Large residential-led urban extensions for new communities in the UK;
  • Town centre regeneration strategies feeding into the UK Government's Towns Fund programme;
  • A number of smaller to middle-sized commissions for national housebuilders;
  • Regeneration and community led-masterplanning in support of several Neighbourhood Planning groups, and
  • Commercial/industrial site and strategic portfolio planning in the UK and internationally.
Responsibilities and Competencies


This is an important, mid-level position within the team, requiring the ability to work as part of an integrated team, to the direction of senior colleagues, but also able to lead individual work packages and assume elements of project responsibility.

Technical Abilities_


  • Plan and execute complex project tasks and deliverables, including inputs and outputs by other disciplines, that feed into the master planning process, with oversight from senior colleagues;
  • Demonstrate capacity for analysing, identifying and resolving complex problems;
  • Work with colleagues to develop appropriate design proposals and solutions reflecting the client's brief and instructions;
  • Structure and write reports in a clear, logical and concise manner, and
  • Structure, prepare and, potentially, deliver progress updates or issue-based presentations.

  • Pro-actively communicate within a project team, engaging with senior and junior colleagues;
  • Promote teamwork, maintaining positive morale, progress and support their own and others' career development and instill a creative culture within the practice;
  • Help develop training sessions/courses on new concepts, approaches and/or materials to enhance the capabilities of masterplanning within AECOM's Urban Advisory group, and
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the importance of Quality Assurance Processes and contribute to those process - ensures by reviewing review work of others.

Qualifications:


  • Relevant project experience and a good working knowledge of current urban design issues;
  • Competence in the use of the full range of design‐focused packages including AutoCad, Revit, Rhino, Adobe CC and Sketch‐ Up, as well as Microsoft Office suite;
  • Confidence and competence in drawing and sketching by hand;
  • The ability to work in a consultancy environment, with a strong attention to detail, excellent organisational skills, ability to work independently and show initiative, and successfully manage time to meet project deadlines;
  • The ability to be able to work with senior colleagues as a key member of a multi‐disciplinary team and lead task-level or smaller project teams independently.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
Additional Information

Preferred Qualifications


  • A first degree in architecture/landscape architecture or town planning and a postgraduate qualification in urban design
