    Job description:

The AAIB is part of the Department for Transport (DfT) and our purpose is to improve aviation safety by determining the circumstances and causes of aircraft accidents and serious incidents (without apportioning blame or liability), and promoting safety action to prevent reoccurrence.

We investigate accidents and serious incidents to civil aircraft in the UK (including UK Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies) and overseas where there is a UK interest.

The AAIB is also the UK's Space Accident Investigation Authority (SAIA) responsible for conducting safety investigations when there are spaceflight accidents in or over the UK.

We are looking for someone who is highly motivated, organised and flexible to work within the Operations Centre which is responsible for handling notifications of accidents and incidents and providing support to AAIB Senior Management throughout the investigation process.

The team also assists with the AAIB's activities in the international safety investigation community, organising colleagues' travel and training, and responding to enquiries from external parties.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring accident/incident notifications are processed in a timely and effective manner, providing assistance to the Duty Co-ordinators and liaising with external stakeholders.
  • Updating and quality checking information entered into the AAIB's bespoke case management system and monitoring incoming communications.
  • As part of the team, ensuring the 24 hrs telephone reporting line is staffed during office hours, being flexible and occasionally working outside the standard Operations Centre hours 0830 hrs hrs.
  • Working closely with Principal Inspectors (and wider inspectorate) including obtaining information to support investigations, proofreading and sending out reports, monitoring responses and providing cover for Operations Centre colleagues as required.
For a more detailed description role, please see the attached role profile.

Person specification:

About you:

You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt your delivery to suit a wide variety of audiences, maximising both impact and understanding.

You will have an excellent telephone manner, with the ability to show empathy and understanding in difficult situations, and be very clear in the messages you'll need to relay.

You will have a good understanding of Microsoft packages with the confidence to learn and use bespoke packages.

Your attention to detail will be strong as the notes you take, the data you record and the communications you release are pivotal in supporting our team to make sure that we are as efficient and effective as possible.

You will work to tight deadlines to deliver and manage expectations and deal with conflicting priorities, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to reach common goals.

Additional Information:

On a rota basis, the post-holder will be asked to provide out-of-hours support in the field, from the AAIB's offices or other location to support the operation.

An on-call and out of hours Recruitment and Retention (RRA) allowance will be paid once fully trained.

This role is full-time only.

Any requests to work flexibly will be considered based on the operational needs of the team and the requirement to staff the AAIB reporting line Mon-Fri Due to the reactive nature of the roles within the Operations Centre, some limited working from home may be possible, however, there is an expectation that staff should be able to travel to AAIB headquarters within approx.

one hour as required.
