Surfing is officially an Olympic sport.

The UK is a pioneer in artificial waves with the potential to bring surfing to huge new audiences, domestic participation is over 1m annually, North Devon has been recognised as one of only 11 world surfing reserves andEngland is leading in areas like surf therapy and adaptive surfing.

Our client wants to use surfing to help overcome social challenges and barriers and to see the lineup becomea more culturally diverse place, providing a richer surfing experience for everyone.


EDI Committee Chair:

your role and responsibilities:


  • Supporting the recruitment of committee members; helping to identify the skills and experience needed to deliver the objectives of the Terms of Reference
  • Setting the culture of the committee, creating an environment that gets the best from each member
  • Facilitating committee meetings, providing a purposeful agenda, and allowing new ideas and opinions to be voiced, balanced with constructive challenge and questioning
  • Leading the development and supporting the implementation of an 'EDI action plan' working in partnership with the CEO and operations team
  • Providing strategic and practical advice and recommendations on issues relating to EDI to the Board
  • Using your network and that of the committee to bring in expertise where our client has gaps or can learn from other organisations and sports
  • Developing meaningful relationships with the CEO, Chair of the Board, and other key stakeholders to bring the whole organisation together in mutual pursuit of the same mission
  • Acting as a champion for Surfing England and for diversity and inclusion in surfing

EDI Committee Chair Person Specification:


  • A passion for working with people and making sport more open and inclusive
  • Lived experience or expertise in equality, diversity, and inclusion
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and be able to build relationships through which real change can be delivered
  • High levels of emotional intelligence, able to tackle sensitive and complex issues with compassion and understanding
  • Ability to manage/chair groups of people to deliver effective change through partnership working and changing perspectives
  • An awareness of the commercial pressures faced by small organisations

This is a voluntary role with a time commitment of c days per year, though the committee shall deem as necessary how many times a year it meets (whether in person or via video/ teleconference), along with related preparation and follow upwith the Board and Executive. Reasonable out-of-pocket expenses are paid.
