We are currently looking for a talented and motivated Graduate/Assistant Hydrologist to join our Flood and Water Management Team in Leeds, part of the Sweco Water Environment Department.


You will join a growing team of flood risk and sustainable drainage experts, hydraulic modellers, hydrologists, geomorphologists, civil engineers, and water quality specialists who provide consultancy advice, design and hydraulic modelling services for development and infrastructure at all stages of the planning and design process.


You will be supporting the delivery of a wide variety of projects within the Water Environment sector including: flood protection studies and schemes, surface water management, infrastructure projects, sustainable drainage, water resources / low flow studies, environmental impact assessment for planning, integrated catchment studies natural flood management and river restoration.

The role will involve the development of a wide range of skills depending also on your background and interests e.g.

hydrology; hydraulic modelling; flood risk assessment, sustainable drainage, GIS; WFD, geomorphological and water quality assessments; client and regulator management; optioneering; economic assessments; schematic, outline and detailed design; project and budget responsibility; site visits; auditing and quality assurance; input to bidding; and other commercial activities.

You will develop a well-rounded knowledge in a supportive multidisciplinary environment.

What does the role involve?

  • Work in a supervised environment to deliver project activities to budget and programme
  • Data handling and analysis of large datasets
  • Survey planning and supervision
  • Use of hydrology and hydraulic modelling software and tools
  • Use of GIS software
  • Statistical analysis of data
  • Client and stakeholder engagement and management

To be successful in this role you'll possess:

  • Previous experience of water consultancy experience would be preferred
  • A strong interest in the water environment and an understanding of the issues associated to sustainability and climate change adaptation.
  • Work or study experience in some of the areas of work mentioned above, for example, flood risk assessment or hydraulic modelling.
  • Experience in the following would advantageous: flood risk assessments, hydraulic \ hydrology modelling software (e.g. FEH, Infoworks ICM, Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, HEC-RAS ) and GIS (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS or Mapinfo) or EIA
  • A commitment to continuous professional development and becoming a chartered professional
  • Good problem solving/contingency planning skills with ability to find quick, innovative and practical solutions to problems.
  • Excellent literacy, communication, analytical and numeracy skills
  • The ability to work on your own initiative and to seek assistance when required.
  • The ability to organise and prioritise your workload to ensure that timescales are met.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with others to form strong positive working relationships with both colleagues and clients.
  • Keep up to date with changes in legislation, best practice and relevant polices
