NUH is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated Trust Grade doctor at ST3 or above level to support our Ophthalmology department at QMC.

The post is for 12 months initially from August 2023. This is an exciting opportunity to get excellent experience in general ophthalmology and sub-specialty elective services. You will work closely with consultants, other junior doctors and multi-disciplinary teams.

The post holder will be part of an on call rota alongside Ophthalmology trainees and SAS doctors, and will support our Eye Casualty service at QMC.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will contribute to the ST3+ Ophthalmology out of hours rota at NUH which will include long days and non-resident shifts depending on experience.

Applicants will therefore have completed core surgical training (or equivalent), have full MRCOphth (UK), be registered with the GMC and have experience working within the NHS.

There will be opportunity for time in our specialty and sub-specialty theatres and clinics depending on experience. Specialty and sub-specialty areas of interest within the department include oculoplastics, glaucoma, mascular diseas, neuro-ophthalmology and paediatric ophthalmology.

Working for our organisation

The Ophthalmology Department is situated in a purpose built Eye and ENT Unit at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and comprises a team of 23 consultants providing general and specialist ophthalmic care for the Nottingham area and beyond.

NUH is a tertiary referral centre for many eye conditions.

Most patients are treated as daycases but inpatient facilities are provided on ward C25 within the Eye and ENT centre.

There is also a 24 hour eye casualty department and a laser treatment suite.

Although this is not a training post it should be possible for an enthusiastic doctor to map their experiences to many of the core curriculum programme competences as all aspects of the syllabus are relevant to this attachment.

We encourage our doctors to involve themselves in audit and research.

You would be expected to make yourself familiar with the processes of the audit cycle and to assess the role of audit in clinical governance and in improving patient care.

Supervision for projects will be available, and support may also be available from hospital audit departments.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to;

  • Provide inpatient and outpatient services (theatres and clinics) under consultant supervision
  • Contribute to the emergency out of hours rota
  • Contribute to the Eye Casualty in hours rota
  • Supervise daily ward rounds
  • Conduct patient management in line with plans agreed with the Consultants
  • Support and teach junior colleagues effectively
  • Participate in M&M and MDT meetings
  • Contribute to Quality & Improvement Projects within the department
  • Attend departmental meetings

Post holders can expect to:

  • Build upon postgraduate clinical experience
  • Develop further expertise in the identification and management of patients
  • Further develop experience and familiarity in identifying and managing a wide variety of conditions, including making appropriate decisions regarding the need for admission
  • Further develop skills of history taking, physical examination, appropriate investigation and rational prescribing
  • Master a number of procedural techniques
  • Hone communication skills with patients, relatives and colleagues
  • Develop skills in managing time and conflicting priorities.
  • Increasingly work towards independent practice at Registrar level, leading ward rounds, assessing patients, making decisions etc. with Consultant support and supervision available at all times
