    Protection & Controls Engineer - HV Substations & BESS (EPC Projects)

    About the Role

    We're looking for a skilled
    Protection & Controls Engineer
    to take a leading role in the design and delivery of protection, control, and SCADA systems for high-voltage substation and battery energy storage (BESS) projects across the UK.

    You'll be part of a multidisciplinary EPC delivery team, responsible for developing and integrating protection and control solutions from early design through to commissioning - ensuring safe, reliable, and fully compliant grid-connected assets.

    This role is ideal for someone with a strong technical foundation in electrical protection design who enjoys working closely with construction and commissioning teams to turn detailed designs into operational reality.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead or support the design and development of protection and control systems for HV substations kV) and BESS grid connections.
    • Produce and review protection schematics, single line diagrams, interlocking and wiring diagrams, relay settings, and SCADA I/O schedules.
    • Conduct protection coordination and grading studies, ensuring compliance with DNO, TO, and NGESO standards.
    • Specify and integrate protection relays, control panels, RTUs, and SCADA systems within overall substation and BESS architectures.
    • Support FAT/SAT activities, including configuration, testing, and commissioning of relays and control systems.
    • Collaborate with internal design, procurement, and construction teams to ensure designs are practical, cost-effective, and compliant.
    • Liaise with external stakeholders - including DNOs, TOs, and NGESO - for interface design approvals and protection coordination.
    • Provide on-site technical support during construction and commissioning, resolving design and implementation challenges.
    • Manage design deliverables and documentation through digital project management platforms (e.g., Procore or similar).
    • Contribute to continuous improvement of design standards, tools, and processes within the engineering team.

    About You

    Essential:

    • Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical or Power Engineering.
    • Proven experience delivering protection and control designs for HV substations and/or grid-scale BESS projects.
    • Strong knowledge of protection principles - differential, distance, overcurrent, and earth fault schemes.
    • Hands-on experience with relay configuration software (e.g., Siemens DIGSI, GE EnerVista, SEL AcSELerator, Schneider Easergy Studio).
    • Understanding of SCADA, RTU systems, and industrial communication protocols (IEC 61850, DNP3, IEC
    • Familiarity with National Grid, DNO, and ENA standards.
    • Experience working in a collaborative EPC or design-and-build environment.

    Desirable:

    • Experience with BESS control and interface design, including EMS/PCS integration and grid compliance testing.
    • Understanding of functional safety, interlocking logic, and control philosophy documentation.
    • Experience with digital design and collaboration tools (Procore, BIM 360, or Aconex).
    • Chartered Engineer status or working toward professional registration (IET or equivalent).
