The Bristol Eye Hospital (BEH) at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston Foundation Trust (UHBW) is looking to grow its talented team in Paediatric Ophthalmology to drive an ambitious future vision of care across Bristol and Weston.

Applications are welcomed for this substantive post in the department of Paediatric Ophthalmology, ideally commencing as soon as possible.


The post is designed to providenon-surgical,sub-specialist and general paediatric ophthalmology care for children in the Bristol region (500K population) and sub-specialised care for children referred in from the surrounding Southwest region (1.5 million population) including patients cared for in the adjacent Bristol Royal Children's Hospital - a regional referral hub for Paediatric Neurosciences, Genetics and other specialities.

Clinical:


The job plan comprises 8.5 PAs


This is currently:


  • 5 clinics (of which one is remote/virtual);
  • 5 PA for ROP screening;
  • 25 admin session;
  • 5 PA for MDT and
  • 25 PA for SPA


The postholder will share in screening for ROP in our 2 Level-3 NICUs and training in ROP treatment could be provided if needed.

They will provide outpatient clinics for children with general ophthalmic conditions and will work in one or more themed clinics for example seeing children with Optic nerve disorders, Additional needs or Neurocutaneous disorders.

Clinics are held at Bristol Eye hospital or in one of our two outreach centres:
in Weston-super-Mare and in the University of West of England (UWE) Eye clinic.


The post involves dedicated liaison and support for the wider multidisciplinary team orthoptists, optometrists, community paediatricians (who see children with vision problems in local development hubs (in collaboration with Sirona), or in Special Schools, and with the local Specialist teachers (QTVIs).

Applicants will be encouraged to develop a paediatric subspecialty interest to complement the existing interests in the department.

The department has no requirement at present for additional paediatric surgical capacity.

Applicants who are surgically trained would be welcome to contact us about local providers that may offer sessions for cataract (but not paediatric) surgery if wanted.
