We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.

This clinical fellow post (registrar equivalent) in Critical care medicine is at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust. The post is available from 2 August for 6 or 12 months (renewable). Note this post is critical care only (no anaesthesia placements).

A minimum of 2 years prior experience in ICM, anaesthesia or general medicine is required, including at least 3 months ICM and suitable advanced airway skills.

The post is suitable for applicants who have completed core training.


GMC registration is required:
this post is not suitable for MTI programme sponsorship.


Clinical:


The post holder will take part in a full shift rota, along with other trainees, which provides 24hour care for patients including weekends and night shifts.

This includes

  • Immediate responsibility for care of up to 22 critical care patients
- responsible for the admission and discharge of patients
- liaising with other departments and specialties as appropriate
- maintaining inpatient records,
- ordering routine and emergency investigations and receiving and reviewing their results.
- managing routine and unexpected problems on the critical care unit as they arise

  • Reviewing and admitting new admissions and referrals from both the emergency department and wards.
  • Transfer of patient to radiology etc. as appropriate
  • Compliance with trust and departmental protocols and guideline


As the post holder will be responsible for the assessment and management of critically ill patients with indirect supervision, significant prior experience in intensive care medicine is essential including advanced airway skills and excellent written and spoken English.

This post will include care of patients with suspected and conformed coronavirus.

It also includes management of referrals from other departments within the hospital, including the Medical Admissions Units and Emergency Department and providing medical support for the nursing outreach service.

Supervision and teaching of more junior Critical Care residents is an important part of this post.


The posts are intended to provide experience in adult critical care medicine including intensive care training equivalent to that recommended by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.
