Product development and range selection is a key element to the role of a Buyer, as well as being well aware of developments in your category.

As a Buyer you are accountable for executing the sourcing and trading strategy for your department.


Having a methodical approach, a good eye for detail and a passion for product is a key part of being a Buyer, as well as spotting current trends and building and maintaining strong relationships with suppliers.

You're responsible for

A few of your responsibilities will include to:

  • Identify and source new product ranges which drive the online sales, margin, traffic and conversion performance of existing and new departments
  • Work closely with other buyers and buying managers to ensure online range builds are complementary to current ranges and strategies
  • Carefully prioritise range launches with your manager by measuring against benefit criteria
  • Drive Innovation in the ranges by keeping up to date with product developments and competitor activities and bringing a sense of creativity to the role.
  • Work with pace to meet regular launch deadlines. This involves working closely with Suppliers and internal teams (Merchandisers, Technologists, Web, Marketing, and Design) to ensure product launches are smooth.
  • Actively "trade" your category to maximise sales on a weekly basis. To do this you will keep right up to date on the performance of products (and competitor activities) and take pricing, promotion, merchandising and marketing actions to drive sales.
  • Ensure your buying assistant's priorities reflect key deadlines
  • Develop and encourage your team
